Anyone here at Southampton or MDL dry stack on the Itchen? I'm thinking about using one or other for a 6 month stint this year but would appreciate actual experiances to help decide which one to use. They both seem very welcoming and the services are near identical.

It is a good system, There is a good one at Universal Boatyard on the Hamble. The MDL drystacks are expensive but you may find them reviewing the rates soon. One of the most friendy is the Drystack up the Itchen, the staff are great and security is first rate but I would recommend putting a cover on the boat as you can get alot of dirt and dust in the summer from the scrap metal works nearby.

I use drystack (non mdl) for my old boat.

Pros, easy maintenence, out of water jobs effectively free. Anodes don't erode and you always have a clean bum

Cons, you can't go and just be on the boat - no marina community.

My new boat is kept in the water despite the drystack advantages.

I have looked at Drivers, Southampton Dry stack and MDL. The MDL one looks promising as they also have a number of pontoon moorings associated with the dry stack so that owners can go and sit on the boat / overnight if necessary.

Amazingly MDL are currently cheapest on a monthly basis. (I only need it for 6 months as I prefer to store at home over the winter so I can keep it warm and do all the tinkering.

I used MDL Hamble point for a year. I would definitely propose it if you tend never to stay in your main marina like me! Also, at hamble they allow you to stay on the pontoon for dry stacking overnight for free.

I really loved dry stacking and would recommend it too everyone!

Cheers

Decision made. MDL on the Itchen it is. They are willing to be flexible on a month by month basis as to whether it is on a storage only or unlimited launch basis.

Not what is normally expected from MDL. Or is it just the marina bunch that appear to begrudge taking ones money and letting one have a berth?

i have to say so far they have been very helpful and accomodating. I suppose time will tell how it all works out.

And if you want to overnight you can stop at shamrock quay - only a 3 minute walk back to your car.

And don't be surprised - I've always found MDL very good and have stayed in 5 of their marinas for extended periods, and another 5 for anything between a night and a month. With only 1 exception (a grumpy bloke at hamble point) the staff have always been superbly helpful, and quite a few have gone way beyond the call of duty. They have a commercial ethos yes, but have always been flexible when I want to move around or suspend the contract - I never stay put very long so am probably a nightmare for them.

I would agree what is the point of dry stacking yer boat? there is a case I suppose if you live a long way from the Marina and cant get down on the few nice winter days yer get in the UK. But cant help thinking it would annoy me if a got a nice crisp morning high pressure no wind and could'nt go out.

You only have to look at some of the recent threads showing folks out in such days albeit cold, but having fun in the windless sun with no crowds ont water

But the MDL dry stacks are open 8am to 8pm! So you can always use them. You just give them a call 25mins away. If you see the weather before 8pm just tell them to put it in overnight and it is there for you before 8am! Best of both worlds for me! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Clive,

Do marina marbella still have a dry stack? Are there anymore built or being planned??? If there is one it would be great for the day boat..

PS. Due down permanantly in two weeks!

Cheers

That's what appeals to me. Rather than the faff ot getting it ready, towing it to the water, paddling around launching and retrieving, when you can gen some nice bloke with a fork lift to do it for you.

Also no Antifoul, anode problems, scrotes bashing into it, worries about it slipping it's mororings.

I suspect it works well for littluns like me. Over 30ft it would be different. I think during the winter I would still keep it at home as I like being able to plug in the heater, do the tinkering etc. I suspect the time at home will decrease though as it is so easy to get it launched for those crisp winter runs. (too cold at the moment though)

The other thing is that if we want to go elsewhere we just take the trailer there, they load the boat on and off we go. When we return they just likt if back into the rack and off we go.

I've been dry stacking for 10 years. Excellent. I reckon I save a grand a year, no antifoul, no anodes, no bellows problems, no weed growth, ever, so save fuel, plus leg looks like new for years, as does everything else.

Just phone half an hour or so before you need the boat, and it's ready and waiting. Can be a bit busy on a sunny Sunday evening sometimes, but isn't everything.

Where you gonna be?

Not sure about MM I assume you mean in Banus?

They may only stack boats bought from them that is the case here in Duquesa with Don Marino who sell Montereys

See what you mean about dry stack of course they will launch and restack as you wish.

Got a Flat in Gib for a few months and will then look at options. Will take our time deciding the best option for living!

Intend to pop down to Duquesa for a nosey! By the way, do you know the Sealine S28 Bolero (approx 1996) that the guy wants rid of in the marina?

Cheers

Certainly do I have it for sale follow link below. I sold it to him about 18months ago. Clean boat twin deisels. Let me know if I can help.

By the way did you follow any of the posts in that monster thread about living in Spain? not the bits about VAT on boats the bit about Matriculation tax.

Oh by the way I'm gonna be at the Gib boat show 9-12 April on my boat.

Great!

He is trying to flog it on Ebay as well so I was just being nosey. If we do not buy a liveaboard will buy a gig boat for weekends in spain. I did not know there was a Gib boatshow, which marina is it in?

Yes, I did follow the threads so am a lot more prepared now! It is a Tax nightmare at the moment between UK and Gib, never mind including Spain as well........

Cheers
