Drooooone foooootage!

--Glare-- I Use a Hood. DJI makes one http://store.dji.com/product/inspire1-phantom-3-remote-controller-monitor-hood-tablets. Plus then if you stand in the shade it's fine.

--Googles-- I used them in the past when I was putting my drones together. They are good regarding sunlight, but that's about it. Resolution is poor and you are cut from the outside world. They also tend to fog as you sweat your flight stressing about everything that can happen!

--Alts of controlling-- It's very hard to beat the level of precision of sticks and fingers. If the drone or the camera doesn't do what you envisioned it's because what you were envisioning was probably a complex motion and nothing else at the moment will help you out until your brain is wired straight in the drone's head! Practice practice practice. Sticks plus camera tilt have to come together in some harmony and practice is the only answer. I didn't have to go thru that stage because I was flying RC helicopters, like the scary ones that will mince a bird. And it was challenging. Something you may consider is a simulator. They are not just games, they will very seriously up your skills in the comfort of a chair. The one I was using was http://www.phoenix-sim.com. It is an INVALUABLE tool if you want to progress fast.

--Other Apps-- Bit of an extension from the last subject. Software can only do so much to help you out. For example, lets say you want to take a footage underway. Well just use the follow me function mode right? Well it's only going to follow from one angle. Want to move around your target and in the mean time take some altitude tilt your camera and position yourself right on top of the moving target? Forget follow me. At least for the time being. Practice practice practice :ambivalence:

Hi Steve. Yes that was a few weeks ago. If you can go when the weather is good you can get plenty of very good days. We are lucky enough to have the flexibility. Even school doesn't mind! There's something with the islands and Gero, it's like, where are you off to? The islands? No worries, make sure she reads a book and writes what she's done once a day!

I hope your offer gets accepted. Are you based in Perth or Gero?

We are based in Perth... we have a few friends that want to go / regularly go there.. and generally go places as a group - mainly Rotto which we do lots of times year.. but have heard so much about the islands.

We know its doable in a 6m boat... as some of our club members have gone in the past - but I think I would like the ride up from Perth and a bigger (35ft) boat would make it lots nicer too..

Awesome that the school is like that for you! Unfortunately we would have to plan our dates around my business, and therefore the weather would be guaranteed to be poor :) Its definitely on the list to do - once we have a larger boat - once being the important bit...

Steve

I dunno about camera angles etc and TV viewing, but Match will be berthed right by the nouvelle chicane on the quay in very centre of pic below:

Enjoy the atmosphere. We did the classic GP a few years ago. Actually a funny story. We bid for it at a charity auction thinking it was the classic, ie. world famous Monaco GP. It turned out to be the classic ie. old cars, historic GP.

Flew in by helicopter, stayed at the Metropole Hotel, had catered viewing on top of the cafe de Paris and really enjoyed ourselves. Still remember the lunchtime "display" of F1 Ferraris driven by period F1 drivers. Turned out to be a 1 hour no holds barred Monaco GP as everyone enjoyed themselves :)

Monaco is a funny old place. Leave reality at home and float around with the beautiful people. Helps if you use a mental exchange rate of 25 pence per Euro :)

I'll keep an eye out for you. A shame you don't have a union flag hard top like someone else a few years ago who stole the TV limelight in Spain ....... :)

Henry :)

Thanks for that advice - and JFM's advice.
I bought the drone last Christmas and have flown it half a dozen times but I really wanted it to capture some Med images.
The early part of this season has been installing upgrades and getting all the kit serviced so the drone has been at the bottom of the list.
But over the next few months, I will be able to spend some time on it and do some of the "practice practice practice" that you are saying.
Part of me is thinking that the moment it goes over water it will drop in the drink!!
A few days ago, I went through the free introduction lesson on this Udemi course https://www.udemy.com/phantom-filmschool-3-the-easy-way-to-shoot-like-a-pro/
Virtually all his course is based on automatic flying using the Litchi software - I will try some of his ideas but I don't think I have the patience to set up a specific mission each time I want to take some pics.
Also, I think that Litchi missions benefit from fixed land based missions - most of the kind of thing I want to do wouldn't have a fixed reference within Google Maps.
However, I am seriously considering running his course - I like the artistic side of his training - I have the artistic brain of a pea - so I need all the help I can get!!
You seem to have cracked the artistic bit - there are others on here that have also got a great eye for these kinds of things - JFM, Henry, Scubaman and MapisM to name but a few.
I struggle with this kind of thing - but I'm keen to work on it so maybe a bit more time and I will get some results.

I'm treating this drone thing in the same way as my other cameras.
About every 2 years, I buy a good camera or addition to my cameras.
I don't spend a huge amount on the top of the range professional cameras but, then again, I don't buy the cheapest.
The mid range Canon cameras (plastic bodies) seem to fit the bill.
I don't expect 100% perfect pics form my mid range SLRs but IMO I get about 80% of the way there.
So, I'd like to think that the Phantom range of drones fits into this concept.
Thanks again for your advice.

Respect, regarding the manual flying in a circle. Mine tend to be a bit egg shaped!

Ref above, I think the p4 allows you to move the drone in follow-me mode (they call it something else now, not follow me), to change viewing angle. The software doesn't just follow the GPS position of the handset, it optically "locks on" to the target using image processing and keeps that target in middle of screen, even if you circle the drone camera around. That is all "I think" stuff - I have not tried it properly yet, so I'll report back

It definitely does that using the Litchi software.
All these extra software alternatives are built on the DJI SDK so maybe the DJI Go App also does this "lock on".
Oh dear - there is SO much to learn!!

EDIT
Just found this clip on youtube
The answer to your point is at 40 seconds into the clip and there is a full demo at 4 mins 50 secs into the clip.
Litchi (kind of) adds features to the P3 that are found on the P4.
But I think it is well worth watching the whole clip.

EDIT 2
Actually, this is an impressive clip showing the Litchi app "locking on" to a subject

It's the track and follow that's going to be hard to implement for them. Sure you can follow, but what about orbiting while following. And add gaining altitude while orbiting and following. I guess it's all going to happen, but nothing will replace improvising around a subject.

Talking about orbiting around a moving object, here's one I took of two friends going spearfishing. It's a single take. Notice the range as I am at the departure spot.

I thought 'wow I would love to live somewhere with water that flat its never like that in WA', was amazed when you then said it was Abrolhos Islands. Is it like that often up there, I have never seen it that flat even between Perth and Rotto?

Amazing footage and I'd love to come up but 400km from Perth I'd need to refill a few times, are there any ports to stop in between Perth and Geraldton?

JFM, same spot as I was spoilt with last year, 'eh?

Skip about 30 seconds into the video as I can't edit very well.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0OALCBjQqE
Will be at the F1 again this year but not sure where the boat will be this year.
haha yes we are three spaces to the right of that video. I'm there now. Drop by tomorrow afternoon if you get the chance.
My stbd side neighbour is a princess about 85 feet running his genetator all night. 6 feet from my 2 stewardesses who can't sleep. . There is an unused elec socket at his stern but the boAt is standard laughable princess spec so it has a 60 amp non glendinning shore lead that can't run his aircon. Had exactly same last year in bonifacio when a brand new p88 pulled in next to me and uncoiled his comedy yellow 60 amp cable and then ended up running his genset all night. Princess really are properly naive when it comes to bigger boats. They are still living in the 40 foot world. You'd have to watch them like hawks if you ordered their 75 let alone anything bigger.

Ive got a difficult negotiation tomorrow with next door captain; alternative is he runs genset for 4 days. Niiiice.

Ants, there's a big difference between open ocean Perth waters and the Abrolhos. The Abrolhos is a whole reef system with protected waters. There are moorings over there even blowing 30 knots your boat won't rock and inch, it will swing, but won't rock. And that's a big difference. As to dead calm the answer is easy, you have to go when the weather is good. If you can, you will get plenty of beautiful days over there. We spend about 2 months a year on the Abrolhos, this year we will probably top 3 months.

Sure, I did the trip Perth-Gero a few times. You can refuel between, just look at http://www.baileysmarine.com.au/fuel-locations

Whilst I sympathise with your plight I did have a little chuckle to myself. A first world problem if ever I heard one.

"Dear Daily Mail. I am currently berthed in Monte Carlo for the Grand Prix and........."

I am of course emensely jealous and wish you all a great weekend :)

I still haven't forgotten Valencia and seeing a certain someone enjoying the race from their boat every single lap !
