It's time for a new droni. This time I'm following the big boat, not the dinghy. I had to ask my wife to slow down because there was a slight head wind and the p3p couldn't follow. So we're at 19 nots instead of our cruising 24. I'm also flying atti instead of gps, i'm finding that mode gives me smoother motion. Who will guess what beast is circling the boat?

Looks like a sand shark, 'innit?
I've never seen one while I was in the GBR, but I guess that's somewhere down there, judging from the video?
Regardless, a very nice footage indeed - thanks for sharing it!
 
Regarding the beast, not a sand shark, much more harmless, look at the shape that will give you a hint.

And you, it's of the coast where we live in Western Australia. The islands are called the Abrolhos islands.
 
wow, spectacular! barely a ripple on the water and no other boats in sight makes looke quite surreal!

Is the boat a Velasco 43? Looked at one at the Jersey boat show recently and was very impressed. Great value for money and seemed very practical. Slightly put off by the 27kt top speed but if you can cruise happily at 24kt then no issue.

Now for some questions.
How do you cope with glare on the tablet/phone?
I find that even in the shade, I cant see the screen clearly.

Just spent the last few days investigating vf goggles.
Came to the conclusion that the Fat Shark concept with an HDMI converter is a bit "old hat" now.
So, I've been thinking of Google cardboard style headsets so I bought one of these to play with https://www.amazon.co.uk/BlitzWolf-...17685&sr=1-2&keywords=BlitzWolf+VR+Headset+3D
It is a bit of a faf but my Samsung S5 fits in OK.
It then needs some software - other than the DGI Go App
There are several alternatives that I've found - all since DGI released the SDK last Christmas.
Being an Androider I was going to have a go with these two:-

Using either of these apps, it seems to me that you could control the drone's camera by turning your head whilst still controlling the flight with the joysticks.
I would have thought that DGI would have an upgrade to their Go software for this kind of concept - all it needs is the ability to manage the menus from the C1/C2 key switches.
I have very little experience - but I will have some time this summer to experiment quietly when I'm on the boat on my own.

Any advice would be gratefully accepted.
 
Excellent filming, very proff! I can't wait to try some similar filming off the coast here in Norway with my P3P, are you using a filter on the lens, if so what type?
 
Wow, what fantastic water with breathtaking islands. Last time we were over there near Geraldton it was 46c and there was a bush fire the size of Wales about 50 kms away.

Oh the beast looks like a Guitarfish, but the tale is shark like, therefore is it a Guitar Shark?

You made me wonder if I was wrong in remembering the name, and by googling around I realized that also the grey nurse is called sand shark (actually tiger sand shark).
What I had in mind is the beast in the pic below.
I knew it as sand shark, but maybe there's another name for it, like guitarfish, as captnjack suggests?

Re. the place, doh! I didn't notice that you're based in Geraldton, when I guessed that the video was taken somewhere along the Great Barrier.
Quite a long way indeed, but at least I got the hemisphere right... :D

Good going flying atti! Where you circle the SUP @3.25, did you fly that circle manually or use the POI function?

I have not used P4 other than a quick test, but hope to his weekend in Monaco (grand prix), and it will follow the mothership as in your video, but I wonder how the smoothness will compare with your great atti flying. We'll see

Hurricane, I think you are over thinking it. You can buy sunshields on ebay for pennies, or sit inside the saloon, and the thing can be flown really smoothly using just the joysticks and the camera tilt control, as Michaf shows, and it takes only a small amount of practice. I'd set the tilt control to a slow speed, in the menu, to avoid tilt jerkiness. They really are incredibly easy to fly and I wouldn't over engineer it or over think it

Any chance you might put the Mercs off a bit with a low speed pass at Ste Devote in order to give everyone else a bit of a chance...? :D

I think all these drone videos just go to emphasise how lucky we are to be able to experience the places we do in our boats.

For all the moaning about internal staircases, layouts, propulsion methods and so on we do get to live the dream in a way very few on this planet can.

Speaking of which will Match be in the harbour for Monaco for us to see on the telly ?

Not had the pleasure of the Abrolhos yet - our 6m tinny may be a bit small for most weather up there.. when was this shot? As i think there may only be a few days a year that flat?

Just waiting for our offer to be accepted on a larger boat (if its still floating after the recent storms) and we'll be hoping to do a cruise up there from Perth..

The "shark" is actually a shovel nosed Ray if i'm not mistaken.. :)
