Driving in France - NB

I actually know a bit more of the background behind this from the French press.

As you all probably know France has the worst road accident death-rate in Europe. The French genuinely believe ( the government have claimed this a number of times) that this is due to the geographical situation of the country and the number of foreigners who drive through it causing accidents. Strangely they are particularly unimpressed by one neighbouring country which steams through every summer but makes things difficult by having the steering wheel on the other side of the Car. ( Look , I know this sounds totally ridiculous but yes it's true... these British chaps drive on the OTHER side of the road). Consequently they are looking for intra-government support to catch the supposed wrongdoers. Allegedly...

Strangely ... the French police find that these foreigners find all kinds of ruses not to turn up for all their motoring hearings .. like not carrying driving licences.... giving false addresses.... pretending not to speak French...claiming to be rushing for a ferry

Just an alternative view BUT the view that the accident-rate is due to the number of differing foreigners driving through France is genuine..

fruity comparison

Erm the technical description of that kind of comparison contains the words oranges and apples :-)

Yes you can be done in UK court for offence done abroad and you can change the law if necessary. But there has to be evidence in front of the UK court that you did it. The evidence here is the gendarme, so are they really gonna fly him across BA on Club Europe to say bloggs was speeding? And before anyone suggests it, a mere paper statement from the gendarme wont do becos the defence requires the opportunity to cross examine such a key witness, quite rightly in order for there to be a fair trial.

Brendan, yes sorry if I was yelling above and shooting the messenger - OK I see that you were just saying what was reported in t'press :-)
