That sounds more likely.....but WHY....... wonder if an incorrect set up!

Thats what I was thinking, as whole set up inc engine new 2006. Boat on hard for 18months since then, so no ida. WIll hopefully find more when old ones taken out.

D1-30 Vibration

My boat was re-engined some 6 weeks ago with a D1-30 by a Volvo agent who made a good job of it. From the outset the engine whilst running smoothly at 1,000 plus revs suffered from heavy vibration when ticking over so much so that hoses were being chafed. Volvo recommend an idling speed of 850 +/-25 and the problem has been partially solved by increasing the tickover to 1,000 rpm. However, at this tickover when a load comes on the engine (via the alternator for instance when switching from the starter battery to the less well charged service battery) revs fall to 800 and the engine vibrates and loses its previous smoothness. This can be manually overcome by setting the throttle control back to 1,000 revs but I would not have thought that should be necessary?

Has anybody any thoughts?

Following my earlier posts I can confirm that the vibration problem was as good as completel;y solved by having the two forward engine mounts replaced, and it now runs smoothly at all revs and loads. Could you have the same problem ?.

..... and also why has it likely failed (if it has). Volvo D1-30 suspected faulty "drive plate" failure tbc tomorrow, causing excessive vibration when idleing. Any ideas anyone ? Out of warranty by the

way.

HAve heard of a couple more like this with one in my marina.

It was a re engine job and the new Volvo was a much lower engine than the old one. The result of this was that the exhaust pipe from the mixing elbow to the water trap had a slight rise in it. This meant that everytime the engine was stopped some water ran back to no 3 cylinder and slowly damaged the valves etc. When the engine was vibrating it was actually only running on two cylinders.

Check your exhaust outlet from the mixing elbow falls in level to the water trap and no chance of this also check the compression on the rear most cylinder. You won t need a compression gauge if like the one here!!!!!

This was an installation done a while ago.

See my previous posts about engine mounts, they can be obtained a lot cheaper than from volvo dealers as in less than £40 per mount!

If the alternator load drops the revs by 200 then there is something wrong with the engine is my guess.

D1-30 Vibration

Thanks all for your comments. I am sure the engine mounts are ok and the exhaust drops about two feet to the water trap so I guess it is not the problem Bilgediver describes. By posting I was hoping to learn if anyone else had a similar problem before I start pushing hard for a solution. Any further thoughts most welcome.

Ive not had this problem, but I know somebody that has, its was a worn drive plate, which manifested itself as a kind of tinkling evident at idle. drive plates have rubber or spring based torsional dampers and these ( especially the spring ones) when they wear can clatter about.

D1-30 Vibration

Thanks all for your comments. The vibration problem with my new Volvo D1-30 has turned out to be a problem with the engine mounts! Evidently the rubber inside the (brand new) mounts had broken down causing the violent shuddering/vibration. The type of mount, which has a hard rubber insert, is the one generally used for such installations I am told.

Over recent weeks with the local agent making frequent adjustments to tick over speed, checking alternator loading (it is a 115 amp one), changing service batteries because of a duff cell, etc etc, the problem persisted. Ultimately, upon me formally rejecting the engine and demanding a replacement, Volvo UK suggested the engine mounts were checked and provided post haste a completely different design with softer rubber inserts.

Problem solved and engine runs smoothly and quietly throughout the rev range! Frankly, I would not have believed engine mounts could make such a difference. What rankles though is the fact that it appears that there is little communication between manufacturer and agents for surely I cannot be the only one to have experienced this problem.

Red dwarf had a problem with the drive plate .Rimmer didnt tighten it up properly and every body on board died except Lister. So make sure its tight!!:)
