Hi

Any body know a uk supplier for this stuff it is a replacement for the traditional stuffing used in the stern gland. West marine sell it and it is supposed to be a non drip type of stuffing. Also has anybody tried it? It would save me the aggravation of replacing with a pss seal.

Thanks

Maurice

Why not save all the aggravation and replace it with a Volvo seal? Much better job and less expensive.

Asap supplies do it. http://www.asap-supplies.com/ Search for ptfe packing.

In 4 years of cruising I´ve had to tighten the gland a little once, never see a drip. No point fixing something that isn´t broken.

Maybe because Volvo don't make the correct size to fit the shaft or stern tube. I would have liked to do that this year when I fitted a new shaft but they don't make them for 22mm shafts. I repacked with with PTFE packing . It took a few hours running and adjusting but after 2 hours motoring today there was not a drip and the housing was only just warm to the touch.
Well pleased :)

Thanks

Ill get some PTFE tape I did look at the Volvo but it looks like they dont do my size.
All i have to do is work out what size i need.

Ptfe packing is not what the OP was looking for I think it is more like this stuff described as moldable clay packing.

I haven't heard of anyone using it but the info says it last "several seasons" I think that's a good reason not to use it.

I have it on my boat ,no problems not a drop from the packing gland.I would use it again. In fact have got some already in the boat spare kit.
Having the shaft out for other reason, leak between boat and tube:( so may have to use that rather sooner than later.

Virtually nobody uses 22mm shafts these days. Minimum is 25mm/1"

Think you will find your shaft is 1 1/4" and Volvo seals are made in all sizes 1-1 1/2 and of course the metric equivalents. Dimensions are on the Volvo accessories site. Well worth the effort of the change if you can do it without mods to stern tube.
