well its like this, the words and especially those in quotes are lacking in conviction are based on unsubstanicated opinion with no supporting facts so a big pic is used to fill the gap!

Cheers! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Can we assume that there will be no 'in charge' sort of offence such as is there with cars.

You know the sort of thing, asleep in the back, over the limit but with the keys in your pocket - guilty of 'being in charge of a motor vehicle while under the influence of drink'. Disqualification (if not, 10 points), possibility of up to 3 months in chokey and/or fine.

Bet they do try to bring that in as well.

"Some enthusiasts may think these rules are going too far or are aimed at hampering their enjoyment - for example, the narrow boat owners who travel at fairly sedate speeds along Britain's canals.

"But the momentum created by large boats even at low speeds can crush and maim anyone who gets in the way.

The carnage on the canals must be terrible. Anyone got the casualty figures?

And when a boat is moored - you can party as hard as you like.

Surely if anchored you're not underway, but are you moored?

What if you are drunk on your boat and it is on a trailer attached to your car! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Why boats over 7m long?
What about the boy racers in their under 7m long boats.

Seems like a dig at the bigger boat owners to me.

It must be a common occurrence people being crushed and maimed on canals, just surprised I hadn't heard about it before now!

Another dickhead minister looking to make a name for himself.

What happens if you are anchored for the night, settle down for a meal with a nice bottle of wine, when conditions unexpectedly change and you need to move the boat to somewhere safer.

This is daft; I thought they could already do someone who is drunk while helming a vessel?

"It is difficult to square that position with allowing people to be drunk in charge of a vessel that can travel as fast as a car.

35 footers have an average hull speed of 7-9 knots. Ummmm ohh, he's government.

Maybe it will end up full circle with a person in front of the boat in a dinghy with a red flag?

What a load of c**p
by the same thinking we should make it illegal to ride a horse or pony when drunk or ride a bicycle (capable of more than 7mph)

Come to think of it we must not be allowed to sprint home from the pub..... at mor than 7 mph.

The comparison with cars is ludicrous..... even the smallest basic car these days is capable of reaching speeds in excess of 70 mph on a confined road.

i dont think many small cheap boats are capable of this speed.... ???

As such, I hope that people will accept the new law for what it is - a proportionate and reasonable measure aimed at avoiding accidents and making the marine environment safer and more enjoyable for everyone."

Why not wait to see the small print. I think its hard to disagree with the aim.

If only it were that simple. The real aim is to pass a new law that looks like taking tough action on rich drunken yahoos rather than the effect of adding additional laws over and avove those already in existence.

May even be Ladyman trying to show he is "tough" in order that Gordon keep him in post. Now there's a genuine NuLabour reason for additional legislation...

[/ QUOTE ] AFAIK it is still an offence to be drunk in charge of a horse. Last case I recall was in Basingstoke (where else?) about five years ago.
