Hi All,

I have bought and am in the process of putting back together a very old fiberglass lugger...

I have no idea about rigging her but am hoping I'll work it out...it is the bags of beads that worry me!

Anyway...I am sanding back the gaff and have a question, on one side there is a wooden chock which is missing on the other...what is it for and does it need replacing...also there are a number of screw holes looking like someone has removed a cleat...and drascombe owners that can help me?

Thanks

Jamie

The chocks are there to prevent the strop from the gaff halyard moving too far up the gaff and they define the attachment point for the halyard.
The parallel beads are attached to the end of the gaff jaws and prevent the gaff jaws from slipping aft from the mast. The beads give a relatively friction free means of keeping the gaff jaws set to the mast when hoisting the main.

Hope this helps.

As viva said, the chocks stops the halyard rising up the gaff. there's usually a second set of wedges the height of the reef further up the gaff. (wedges circled in yellow)

Bags of beads ?

More than just enough for the gaff jaws? Maybe also for attaching the sails to the mast and gaff ??

Parrel beads BTW

A little bit of an overkill I would have though for a boat the size of a Drascombe lugger but almost certainly what they are for.

IIRR from 25years ago I had parrel beads on the gaff of my Drascombe Longboat - the Luggers slightly bigger sister - same Gunter rig too.

Yes it does have parrel beads... both at the gaff jaws and at halyard height . Found the instructions file written by the designer.
