Advice wanted from the wise heads here. Should I drain the oil on my Perkins 4107 now, after it has stood for about 6 weeks, or run it up to temp first. My thinking is that it has settled and I'll get more out. I can leave it to drain for a week if I want. Discuss. :)

thanks for that although my motor is over 50 years old and not a modern one like quoted in the article. In the absence of other information I think I'll do the hot drain but leave it overnight to drain. For the cost I might even run for an hour and flush it with a fill of new oil and drain that as well. (y)
I think it is more to do with the property of the oils than design of the motor?

IMO, always drain warm. It makes the oil much easier to remove, and running just beforehand traps and small particles in the oil rather than them settling out and sticking in the sump.

Edit to add - I also only ever use a vacuum pump (Pela) too. I never mess with a sump plug anymore, car or boat.

Oil is cheaper than metal.
I don't worry too much about exact dates but I do believe in annual oil changes regardless of hours run in cars as well as the boat.

As for engine oil change on the boat I extract on a warm engine then leave it overnight . Always there is some more oil to pump out the ext day even if it is a bit slow.
