Re: Free WiFi...

Sadly its not just what the router can handle, the backhaul has to be considered too. If the backhaul is ADSL (and it usually is) then adding an extra 50 users concurrently is likely to cause problems.

Another consideration is the attitude of the backhaul supplier, many (most) specifically forbid the sharing of a connection. Those that don't quite reasonably charge a premium rate.

The problems can be overcome by using alternative backhaul (wireless, leased line etc) but the costs are prohibitive.

We run the wifi on the river dart and I deliberately constrain the number of concurrent users to way under 50 to ensure the service remains useable.

We also provide wireless broadband, with a wireless backhaul, to our home village. I have so far not needed to constrain the service but I pay a LOT more for the backhaul.

Cheers

Re: Free WiFi...

Last night a well known marina wireless provider appeared to send me an email with all their current daily problems, network config, user names etc. I have deleted it.

Lots of talk in it about overcharging, double charging etc.

Im not a tecchie but I think there is a longer range wi fi standard being developed for the future, tho it would mean getting a new wi fi card but with 10x the range this would mean you could connect to any wi fi service provider in the area and not be monopolised by the service any marina cares to offer. It may be a way off but it would be a blow to Square miles market position surely.
Anyway what does Square mile offer that say BT openzone doesnt? Apart from being able to market to wealthy boaters and marina operators.
