Last weekend I had a problem where the volvo outdrive stayed in the up position and continued as though the trim switch was held on. The prop went to it's maximum up position, luckly I had only just left my berth and limped back while that trim motor stayed on.

After about 5minutes the fault cleared itself and all was working as it should. After some advice etc, I then went for a long run to the Bournemouth Airshow and the fault hasn't returned.

However, I got some advice from seastart and he suggested replacing the relays.

Looking up those relays, Volvo charge the earth, two relays seemed to be around £100 to £150 depending where you look. So my question, do you know where I can get those DPE spec relays or does anyone have the spec of the relays fitted. I see places like Halfords sell them for £8.00 for a 12volt 40amp 4 pin relay.

Any advice welcome.

You will need two 5 pin 12volt 40amp automotive relays. You will need to make sure that pins 85 and 86 are opposite eachother and pins 87 and 87a are not internally connected. You will probably have to clean out the terminals in the sockets too.

Good luck.

Hi

Good advice already given, by all means get replacements but I have always found removing the relays, clean the contacts and spray the terminal blocks with WD40 and refit the relays has always worked for me.
Don't forget there are 4 relays, 2 on the pump unit (40amp and the usual ones to clean) and 2 near the gauges, (20/30 amp) they are not the same part numbers by the way.

Thanks aquatom, that's just what I needed to know.

Peanut, thanks for the advice, since I posted, I might hold off purchasing the relays, considering if one fails I can just disconnect the relays and reverse the polarity to the motor to get it in the down position.
