When changing anodes today I noticed a drop of oil leaking from the big seal (between the forward prop and the ring anode.

Good news is that the oil is clean (when drained) so the seal probably gave up over the winter (how that happens is beyond me). Anyhow, change the seal and be done with it...

I found the following info on another forum:
"You need to take out the two hex bolts behind the round anode, then you can tap the bearing housing out of the leg, I use a paint scraper to get it started about 1/2" back here is a join, then you can get 2 screwdrivers in and work it out of the leg, the thin inner axle stays in the drive.
You pull the bearing housing of the outer axle and then you can remove the seals. The large outer seals just go in with the inner one facing in and the outer seal facing outwards, grease them well and pack the space between them with grease also.
The smaller inner shaft seals have a set of instructions with them, as the seals are different and the inner one only goes one way, grease these the same way.
I use a suitable socket to drift them in, a tip on reassembly is place the plastic bag the seals came in over the large outer shaft before you slide the bearing housing over it, it will protect the new seals from being damaged by the serrations on the outside of the large shaft, then pull it off when its fully on, you will see what I mean when its in front of you.
I always replace the 2 'O' rings behind the bearing carrier at the same time, grease them to aid reaasembly.
Then refit the bearing carrier complete with outer shaft over the long thin inner shaft and tap it home, rotate the outer shaft to make sure the gear teeth mesh or it won't go fully home and refit the twohex bolts"

The above sniplet mentions the smaller seals too, which I don't need to replace.

Is it really that simple?

And finally, can anyone recommend where to get these ASAP? I'm in Ireland but have a UK forwarding address. I notice online (would prefer to just call the likes of KeyPart or whoever and get them sent ASAP) that there are lower seal kits for 290DP, is this what i'm looking for: http://www.keypart.com/stock/22087

Buy genuine seals as some can have mild steel springs in, replace the four ie the two large and two small, make sure you fit the larger of the two small seals the correct way round otherwise it may leak water in, also replace the two o rings on the housing, check the bearings for wear and clean out the casing while the bearing housing is removed.

I stress fit new inner seals as you may damage them, don't use a paint scraper to prise out the housing you may damage it, to pull the housing out fit the inner prop nut and use a 3 leg puller with the legs behind the nut pushing from the small inner shaft. Easy that way.

Done this a couple of times using those exact instuctions, definitely change all the seals and be careful when drifting the new ones in and getting them the right way round. It looks wrong when its right :)
It nots hard just needs some care taking.

Thanks guys, sounds doable.

VP - I assume Keypart supply genuine parts, given the price, so all should be good there.

I am aware to replace the O-rings also, which come in the kit I linked to.

When you say replace the inner seals - they are included in the kit I linked to, yes? In the pic of the part on Keypart website, there are the 2 o-rings, 2 big seals and 2 small seals. I take it I will replace the 2 big seals, the O-rings. You say replace the small seals too - are those the seals that go between the big and small prop-shaft?

Is the inner seal housed on the out-drive, or the housing i'll be removing?

Thanks for the help

For past legal reasons I'm not prepared to comment on what your suggested choice of supplier actually hands over the counter, as I said buy Genuine seals which believe it or not will come from a genuine volvopenta dealer.

The seals are in pairs, two large ones are identical , the inner shaft ones are different seals, the wider of the two fits in first and MUST be fitted the correct way round for it to work.

to pull the housing out fit the inner prop nut and use a 3 leg puller with the legs behind the nut pushing from the small inner shaft. Easy that way.

Paul have taken your advise re. genuine seals, and going to replace all 4 seals (and O Rings)

I'm sort of confused with the method of using the pullers.
Firstly, when the housing is pulled off, is it just the housing that comes, or does the big shaft come with it?

With the pullers, do you mean the 3 legs go on the nut of the bigger shaft, and you're pulling from the outer end of the small shaft? (If so, that would make sense that the shaft comes out with the housing.

Sorry, it's just all a little confusing

Yes and yes.
