Actually I had two spare genoas which I could use like this... the smaller one of a heavier material which I would use running before stronger winds with the roller furler genao already reefed.

I have never found that the two sails had to be exactly the same size or cloth weight.. roughly but no where near exact - and that would be using a Hydrovane self steering gear almost all the time.....

EUREKA!! Thats it Michael..I was just about to have a 2nd fore stay fitted But NOW I'm gonna tell the rigger to fit the U bolt with backing plate..1 concern is there alot of pull/strain on the Spinney Halyard....Thanks Jeffrey,,

OH by the way talking to my Rigger Yesterday (T S Rigging ) of malden 75% of call outs are to Snarled up furling rigs / or corroded fore stays within the rig...I will Hank on for the time being.....

Quick word of warning - because the spinnaker halyard exited the mast top very close to the top of the furling gear I could not use the roller furler to furl without the risk of wrapping the spin halyard round the furl gear... possibly different on different masts.

I never found this a problem (once I knew about it) as when the wind got too strong for two boomed out Genoas I would simply take the 2nd one down and continue under the full genny of the furler genoa... and gradually furl that.

As I posted earlier I did have a heavier - smaller 2nd spare genny and in stronger winds would hoist that with the already partly furled roller genny - but not often....

I would only use a spinnaker when the winds were so light the twin headsails would not fill properly even boomed out... cos I was frequently single handing the spin was very difficult to strike alone or with just one crew.

I cannot belive there is any more 'weight' on the spin halyard with a genoa than with a spinnaker full of wind....

Good point I guess thats true no more strain than a full Spinney...Also its a shame we cant put diagrams on the forum:if poss could you rough out the preventer method also mentioned in the article which I started this thread with..In the original article the sheet from the 2nd foresail formed part of the preventer (Why I didn't save it I know not) I am going to try a block system from fwd to boom back to cockpit to prevent jibe ......

I don't think I did post about a mainsail preventer..

However for what its worth I use a spare sheet clipped on the end of the boom then lead it around the horn of one of my midship mooring cleats and then back to a winch... a bit basic but has always worked well for me. Really easy to co a controlled gybe with it you can let it run out real slow as the boom goes back and over... easy if single handing as well..

I used this arrangement too, but used a snatch block on the preventer to run the lead forward - that way you can adjust it easily from the cockpit. It also helps because if you get the lead in the wrong place you just take off the snatch block and re-attatch it without having to re-run all the lines.

We us this set up alot - assuming you are considering a long passage, set up the pole on a guy,up & down haul so permanetntly rigged to windward - thus genoa can be rolled away without having to play with the pole. It then leaves the lee for loose luffed spare genoas/yankees or crusing chutes as the mood/wind/crew energy dictate.
