dover or ramsgate

Used to live in Ramsgate

In Dover... there used to be a wonderful Indian Restaurant called The Light of India underneath a big 1970's office block just on the right of the pedestrian underpass.. I know the whole thing is to be demolished for a "regeneration" project. so it may have no longer be there

In Ramsgate there is an arcade of restaurants right underneath the RTYC .. Also quite a few near the harbour front and an Indian in Harbour Street..

The RTYC is open all the time.. The RCPYC in Dover keeps shorter hours.. but both welcome visiting yotties ... Indeed have called into RCPYS in oilies whilst they were having a "do" ... still felt welcome ..

Dove Castle is a hike from sea level..and not cheapo to get into... Ramsgate does not have so much but there is something called the Turner centre in Margate which is reachable by bus.. Broadstairs is a very pleasant walk from Ramsgate ... either along the beach at low water (or cliff top at HW) and has a good selection of eateries..

Why not go to both?

Dover is much more sheltered in unpleasant weather than Ramsgate. Unless you lock in at Ramsgate it can get quite lumpy...

Personally I think Ramsgate ashore is a bit better, but the marina at Dover is vastly superior to Ramsgate in terms of customer service.

Of the two we generally pick Dover when we've got the choice

Dover is a dump without any redeeming features.
Do you really want to spend 24hrs (or more) next to a dual carriageway with lorries thundering past at all hours?

Ramsgate may not be the most attractive place to spend a few days, but it beats Dover hands down - no contest.

PS: I would get a visitor discount at Dover (own marina also part of the Transmanche group) and I still won't go there.

We were heading that way this weekend, crewing on a friends boat. He has just told me that Ramsgate is fully booked, so probably worth checking.

cripes - a booking system at Ramsgate, last time I was there they didn't even offer a berth number - it was pot luck. This will be a suprise for our continental colleagues when they come over.
 
I much prefer Ramsgate. The marina is ok, and there are lots of decent shops, bars and restaurants close by. Dover marina is good, but there's a busy, noisy road close by and pretty much bob all in terms of shops, bars and restaurants.

I'm not sure that he was trying to book, just checking that there would be room. I'm just going as deck hand, so not involved with the berthing arrangements.
The boat is large with a long bowsprit, so maybe they don't have room for the bigger boats.
Anyway, we are planning on carrying on overnight to take advantage of the expected North easterly.

Having tried both I'd always plump for Dover.

The higher marina (can't remember the name - through the lock) is cost-effective and can be quite noisy but the lower one isn't too bad. Dover's traffic noise is possibly less disturbing to sleep than Ramsgate's work boats.

Quite a bit to do and see in Dover although on a rainy day the Castle, a whole day out if the weather's not too wet and well worth the entrance price, might not serve. But there's always the museum with the "oldest boat in the world".

On the down side, the seas off Dover's western entrance in a strong south westerly can be most alarming (although locals say "Oh, You just get used to it"). If it was blowing then perhaps port control would let you use the eastern entrance - although, from memory, to do that your boat must be able to maintain 5 knots across the harbour.
 
Ramsgate v. Dover

Was in Ramsgate last Sunday. Most impressed by improvements to the town, windfarm money, and despite being flooded out by French fleet from Calais and Belgian rally from Nieuport, the berthing chappie directed me specifically to a resident's berth he knew was not in use. The showers were clean despite the huge number of visitors. Perhaps the complaints on the forum have had an effect!
Then to Dover on Monday. Marina Staff very helpful. Left boat in Wellington Dock; true it's got a busy road next door, but toilets, showers very good. Eventually found a pub that did good food near Marina, but nothing much in the town except a Wetherspoons which looked a bit "rough" Crew went to Dover Castle, which they said was good.

IMHO it would be Ramsgate. The Pizza Express just outside the marina is good. Walk into Broadstairs and there is a fabulous Pizza place on the High Street so it's good for an early evening walk and then at taxi back.

More pubs and shops in walking distance and no huge dual carriageway to cross.

And who cares about Waitrose? Ramsgate has a Wilkinsons!
 
Ramsgate for me too...the yacht club is worth a visit and there are a lot of shops/restaurants close by. We are off to the CI/ N France (via solent to meet up with another boat) on Monday for 3 weeks so we'll keep a look out for you on our travels.
