Does anyone know if it would be possible to turn up at Dover Ferry Port & hitch a lift over with a car or lorry etc by intercepting them at a booking desk (if such a thing exists) on the route by DFDS Ferries over to Dunkirk (they do not accept foot passengers) or failing that to find some old antiquated bicycle in the near vicinity to take advantage of their offer 15 quid with a bicycle?

Regards Nicholas.

I used to routinely hitch across on lorries but drivers tend to abide by rules and regulations in these paranoid times; pull a bike out of a skip!

as per post 2

the day return used to be cheaper than a single. was difficult to convince them after 4pm, but managed it once in calais

trucks - v unlikely nowadyas as they have no idea who you are and can get into all sorts of legal difficulties if you get stopped by immigration

Cheap folding bike/ or ex skip- thats where one of ours came from- £15.00offer, kitbag on back, folds for train/bus to marina/docks(or use if strike/shut for night) into forepeak on arrival at boat, when home, grease lightly, repeat ad infinitum.
If rich- Bickerton. of course!

I picked up a hitch hiker at Dover once.

It was the one and only time in loads of crossings that I ever got stopped by French customs. :(

No real problem - though they did ask about the two 3 foot machetes, the video cassettes and the ton of bits for racing eights I had in the boot.......

Thanks gents.I now find that P&O Ferries to Calai is the best option if I can get the owner to pick me up from there.Even if I can't I should be able to sort something out & it is the cheapest & the most convenient route.
Damn DFDS & the European Ferries running out of Ramsgate, they don't deserve to make money!

Trains go from Calais Ville Station to Dunquerque at 0534, 0638, 1719; and but not between july 2nd. and August 29th 1222(Sats only), 1325 .
I think there are also regular bus services. If I find out, I'll post again.

Ligne BCD has buses Mon-Friday from Calais Rly. Station(Ville) at 0810 0835 1215 1305 1630 1750 1825 1920. In earlier post I should have mentioned that times were Monday-Friday. Suggest however you check with Tourist Office at Ferry Port for up to date times.

Thankyou very much for your kindness.I hope to go over shortly & the information you have provided is very helpful :)

loads of cars going that way. the tobacco run to belgium passes right through dunquirque. usually loads of room in their cars and vans. they will drop you off, no problem. ive used calais, dunquirque and the chunnel when stocking up with goodies, every route has plenty travelling on it.

Thanks for that. Can you tell me how I would accost them,is there a terminal for DFDS Ferries where they book on where I could ask drivers if they would take me across or something like that?I imagine that many of them book online nowadays & just drive strait on.

Why not take your car, by the time you have paid to park at Dover it is cheaper to do a day trip with car. ( assuming you are not sailing back.)
