From a friend who was in the area at the time….
“first time I have ever heard a real securite call on the vhf. It was odd because as we were leaving the Harbour there was some radio chatter between a boat in the bay and the HM about running out of fuel in the middle of the bay and that someone was supposed to be bringing some, but there was a problem with the vessel bringing fuel, then twenty mins later we heard the all ships…”
no idea if this was the vessel that ran out of fuel but maybe loads of cranking to drag fuel through got things hot. All supposition on my part.

There was a similar incident on Lough Derg in Ireland yesterday. Thankfully nobody was injured and all were taken to safety.

The IOM incident was a Merry Fisher Diesel inboard
I haven’t heard what the cause was as yet

I have for years tried to stress to owners and crew just how dangerous and devastating fire is on a boat.
That was one drill I used to get mad at crew who didn’t treat it as a learning exercise or wouldn’t take it seriously. Given their attitude to safety I doubt the managers actually cared what was written on the performance reviews.

So…..the boat had apparently had a new turbo fitted which caught fire.
The journey time was 10 mins max so I can only imagine the coolant wasn’t bled properly and the turbo, which is the highest point of the coolant circuit, got red hot and caught something close to it?

Do we know who fitted the turbo (so I know who to avoid)? Presumably no engine bay extinguisher fitted so an interesting discussion with the insurer is likely to follow…
