Double tragedy on the Orwell this weekend.

Went out Friday, lost my hat.
Went out Sunday, lost my floating winch handle.

Lessons learnt: Chinstraps on hats only work when sailing upwind, and floating winch handles require a long-handled net on boats with 4ft or more of freeboard.

This just proves that sailing is just so hazardous. It was really irresponsible of you to have gone sailing
The lifeboat doesn’t need the worry that a yachtsman may loose their hat..

Tilley hats have a strap front and back just for such eventualities

Although not afloat, I went out for a walk on the prom at Dovercourt on Friday when HHA Landguard was reporting 28-30 kts. My 12 year old Tilley stayed put, without straps!

Lost hat was a Peter Storm single strapper. I have moved my double strap Tilley hat onto the boat now so hopefully further tragedies can be avoided, at least in the hat department.

I did call both of them in. They searched the river all weekend to no avail. I shall be cancelling my monthly donation, needless to say.

Nonsense. These were disasters and I think we should fork out to pay for counselling. He is bound to get PTSD if we don't and goodness knows how bad things would then get. I would be happy to take care of the Bitcoins.

Lets be philsophical about this. Someone might find either of your items and at least you know the winch handle could be put to good use again or sold on eBay.

Maybe but I felt it was in the same league of sports people being hero’s.

it’s more based on my time as a
paramedic And in ‘other’ emergency services than my current situation.

Try to remember next time you need to reach items overboard, the freeboard can be reduced by adding water into the bilges -- the more you add the more the freeboard will reduce ! Simples

May be a hat pin would do the trick
