In life's rich tapestry of anchors and development, this one looks quite clever.

I like the detail of the way the pin for the flukes is retained, the neat bevel at the top of the shank to allow the shackle to pull at angle without being twisted, and also the mysterious use of a length of chain from the crown.

Like a folding grapnel, it's only as strong as the pivot pin.

The chain must be for a tripping line, not for usual purposes unless it's April 1st.

The price of those Luke anchors is incredible - do they sell any ?! :ambivalence:

I used exactly this model as my main (stern) anchor for many years. Held surprisingly well, given the modest fluke area. But nowhere near as good as the replacement, an aluminium Spade.

thinwater,

I swore I'd never get involved in an anchor debate, but that Norhill job, while clever, doesn't look like it would penetrate weed and hang onto a rocky seabed - ie in an emergency in a place one wouldn't normally choose to anchor - as the Fisherman and Folding Grapnel hopefully might.

Yeah, we all get drawn in.

In fact, the Northill proved itself in the kelp and rocks of Northern California. It is also quite able in sand and mud. I know from testing it will outperform the latest crop of NG anchors in rocks, though that testing was done with the closely related Northill Utility Anchor.

But every anchor is a compromise.
