My daughter and I were discussing double barrel names, not sure how we got on the subject but we have a few questions.
(1) If a woman named "Smith" wanted to keep her surname and married a bloke called "Jones" would she become "Smith-Jones" or the other way around.
(2) Would the man take this new name on also.
(3) If there daughter married a bloke who also had a double barrel name what happens, do you have a double-double barrel name.

If Julie London married Lloyd Bridges and fell over leaving the church she would be "Julie London-Bridges" falling down - Rowan & Martin circa 1975

When Joanne Whalley was hitched to Val Kilmer she was Joanne Whalley-Kilmer, not Joan K-W (not sure if my spellings are right, sorry)

I'm not sure there's really a convention for this, except that whichever is the most euphonious combination tends to be used.

Whenever the name "Joanne Whalley" is mentioned, I get flashbacks to The Singing Detective, and visions of a nurse's uniform. I think I'd better go and have a cold bath now.......

yes, but what happens when the children marry. Four surnames.

in 5 generations there would be 32 barrel surnames. school registers would take the majority of the day!

Now you have a personal plate for the car, is your next move a double barrel name, hence the question? :-)

Err...NO
Cos I would need a new plate then. Not sure how we got on the subject.
Was onboard yesterday, everything OK with yours, mine and everyones as far as I could tell.

Right, are you back from your Singing Detective Bath?

Allow me to mention Gina Bellman then

Off you go for another cold shower /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Just in case I wasnt clear enough with last reply. NO you dont need a new hat for the wedding. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Cold Showers

Aaaargh.

They filmed a scene from "Blackeyes" at the place I used to work. Not, sadly any of the Gina Bellman bits, or else I'd be a gibbering wreck by now. Mind you, I get a flashback every time I see "Coupling" - particularly the episode where she turns up for a dinner party in a coat. And nothing else. And then loses it..............

This is a bit like the days long ago, And someone will correct me here, where you where introduced as the
son of bob descended from the builders of cartoon town, on the island of make believes
well you get the idea, I can see why they came up with surnames,

AND they normally reflected the job or craft you had, ie smith was the black smith.
