Has anybody come across some good quality,5 lever, marine grade lock?
I'm building a wheel house with hinged doors and could use a standard mortice or rim lock but a non-marine one probably wouldn't last very long.
Any feed-back /information would be most welcome.....Maurice.

Maurice.
Try an ASSA stainless steel lock with an ASSA cylinder to operate it. I am a master locksmith and can reccommend that type of lock. Any 5 lever lock meeting BS3621 should do the trick as well, lubricate it regularly and it should last for years. Look in Yellow pages for your nearest locksmith who is an ASSA stockist. You will also find that the keys supplied will be restricted patterns so only the locksmith who supplies the lock and cylinder will cut the keys.
Regards. Bowney.

Blakes, I'm not sure, but Classic marine will no doubt deal with them, it's difficult to deal with them, they are wholesale only, but if you have a friendly chandler, he would help.

Yes

Blakes are impossible to deal with, but Classic Marine can and will get their locks for you - they did for me - and very good they are too.

Conventional door lock.

I couldn't find what I wanted, so I ended up fitting a common-or-garden front door 6-lever Yale lock. Its rather heavy of course, but it was cheap, has worked perfectly for 8 years, and survived one jemmying attempt that would have certainly seen off the pathetic little catches that come as standard on many yachts.

Provided the lock is in a place reasonably well sheltered from sea-water, and made of non-rusting metal, I don't think you necessarily need pay the premium for a 'marine' product.

Sorry

Meant Davey and Co., who supply marine grade locks and yes Classic Marine stock them.

Freudian slip; Blakes make WC's and seacocks, of course.

Abloy

Not sure about 5 lever, but I have a batch of Abloy locks for my sailboat.

3 standard staple type padlocks for various deck lockers, 1 long staple for the hatch fitting, and a barrel lock for the washboards (and an electrical keyswitch when I get round to fitting it).

All are chromed / stainless, all are keymatched, which is brilliant, just 1 key for the lot (plus 2 spares - but none lost yet!). I can get further locks anytime keyed alike.

All have been hammered with sea water, have been rinsed with fresh water a few times a season, and had blast of WD40 once or twice.

After 3 years, all work great, 1 has the vaguest sign of rust in the barrel, which I assume is contamination from elswhere.

Do what I did, borrow the Abbloy book from a good locksmith and work your fittings out from that.

Its rather great obviously, anyway it was affordable, has worked consummately for 8 years, and survived one jemmying try that could have surely perceived off the pitiful small gets that come as standard on countless yachts.
