Rule 5

Look Out

Rule5.jpg

Every Vessel shall at all times maintain a proper lookout by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision.

Note to Rule 5

This is the most important Rule. If it is not observed, the rest of the Rules might as well not exist … … … … … … …

(1972 INTERNATIONAL REGULATIONS FOR PREVENTING COLLISIONS AT SEA [ANNOTATED FOR YACHTSMEN]

4 Knots up the Blackwater. Please, no comments about how exciting is it to sail on TG!

Happy New Year to everyone!!! Best keep out of our way.

Re: Don\'t think we\'ve discussed Col Regs on the East Coast Forum

Pleased to note you have a piece of safety foam to prevent you lopping your ear off.
Need to balance the rig a bit though, just a tad of weather helm there.

Re: Don\'t think we\'ve discussed Col Regs on the East Coast Forum

I claim that any impression of weather helm is caused by distortion of the image - well that's my excuse.

Re: Don\'t think we\'ve discussed Col Regs on the East Coast Forum

Where does it say that the person steering should be the person keeping a look-out? Obviously, good practice would dictate that the lookout is not the helmsman, so Tillergirl must have had a proper lookout posted forward, alert, sober and properly rested.

Re: Don\'t think we\'ve discussed Col Regs on the East Coast Forum

'proper'?
'forward'?
'alert'?
'sober'?
'properly rested'?

Blimey Chris that's a tall order. Could probably manage the 'forward'!!!

You could have sailed like that on the Blackwater today - nice breeze, sun shining, blue sky for a couple of hours this afternoon - saw two other boats. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know, I know. But had the Grandkids round so had to do my duty. Yesterday was fabulous here as well. They are saying there were about 1000 out for the RNLI Boxing Day dip - spectators that is. As I went down there was a solitary sloop coming out of the Leavings into an empty Blackwater. Hey, well its lashing down in a day or two, I'll be glad TG's laid up

" via Belgium to get the Duvel just in case they are running low on supplies "

Obviously done the correct RYA courses ! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Don\'t think we\'ve discussed Col Regs on the East Coast Forum

But exactly how does Rule 5 relate to Rule 19 /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Like I know what Rule 19 (or any other rule) is /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Over the years I've gone by only 3 rules:
1. Don't hit anything
2. BIG boat has right of way
3. When in doubt - follow the ferry

Has served me well

Re: Don\'t think we\'ve discussed Col Regs on the East Coast Forum

I don't know but on Rule 5 likes most things in English are ambiguous. See a 'near miss' is actually a hit init? So when it says 'Look Out', is it saying 'Look out' or 'LOOK OUT!!!'

You see this:

'Every Vessel shall at all times maintain a proper lookout by sight and hearing as well as by all available means appropriate in the prevailing conditions so as to make a full appraisal of the situation and of the risk of collision'

are equally the words appropriate to the vessel cautioned to 'LOOK OUT' as in

Well all right not the last one; you all know what's going on there!

Uhh? Wasn't much like that on Mersea today... doing some fiddling on Gladys and the drizzle drove me home to a beef sandwich and to procure Viakal to de lime the prop. Never saw a sight of the sun, and the wind blowing that damp atmosphere around was parky enough...
