Don\'t piss on the gas sensor !!!!

oooops..
/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
as part of the MAJOR refit / rebuild / adapting to an 'almost perfect' liveaboard boat.. I came across a slight problem with gas sensors for the gas detector..
I placed a bucket (The original heads as such) in an area of privacy as the varnish in the 'old' heads was drying..

Would you believe it ??? Urine (From a wake of a fishing boat - well, not ACTUALLY from the wake, but caused by) does not do them any good, in fact, it now refuses to work. Buggerit !
So, when buying gas sensors, buy the pee proof ones. it will help in the long run..

There is an 'earner' for some manufacturer out there.. hmm.. dont know quite how they would word the advert though /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Damn Damn Damn begger bugger damn... ah well.. you live n learn. they just dont make em like they used to do..

So lets get this right?

You were varnishing the heads and along came a fishing boat, much less than a cable away and someone, obviously male, was standing on the fishing boats deck (Poop Deck?) and pointed his whistle at you and tried to swamp your sensor?

I would be incensed! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Don\'t piss on the gas sensor !!!!

Aha David, if ONLY that were true, but, being a good muslim, I cant tell a lie.. it was my stream of urine that altered the electrical characteristics of the sensor.. the unfortunate fishing people were just passing by...

IT was there wake that instigated this whole gutter type episode,,,, seriously,,.. their fault !!!
I was justly the unfortunate victim of circumstances, not circumcision I might add.. indeed, if one has a pullover, it is harder to shake it... often I follw the Dazz adverts and wring mine out.. it works, but its bloody painful.. anyways, where was I ??

Yes, I remember.. (Varnish fumes et al)

so, fishermen are cool... its my aim (disturbed by the motion) thats the worry.. AND the fact that the manufacturer doesnt make them to the quality and resistance that they should..

Bunch of Sheisters !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Re: Don\'t piss on the gas sensor !!!!

Well David, I was single handed at the time (Normally use two) but.. had to hold on to the rail for the wash... I am sure you well endowed yachtsmen would understand.. so, despite colregs. I was not keeping a good lookout on either the wash or the flow.
Sometimes, one cannot fulfil the absurd requirements of the regulations. and.. with only one hand, it tends to droop and go where it wants..

Perhaps a flag of some sort could be divised..... ?? similar to a fortes hotel door sign ??.. do not disturb. ??.. delicate handling - with only one hand - in use ??

Perhaps , If one thinks logically, the problem could be solved by the female member of the crew lending a hand or two ???

Hmmmmmmmmmm.. that may have merit... ??

I knew a guy in Canada who dated a fine gal.. her father berated him (them) for pissing in the snow.. wasnt really an issue .. but It WAS her handwriting... food for thought...

Re: Don\'t piss on the gas sensor !!!!

Probably a 'Pellistor' device. Basically two thermistors, one coated in a catalyst, the other not, heated, in a chamber open to the air to be sampled. When there is flammable gas present, the Pellistor with the catalytic coating gets hotter than the other one. The thermistors are arranged in opposite arms of a bridge and normally a self-balancing circuit (time constant several minutes or more) of high gain gives a pulse out when one thermistor takes the bridge out of balance.

Your pee will probably dry off if you flush the Pellistor with distilled water. Trouble is that the Pellistors are usually behind a sintered plate (Flameproof, eX) and the plate could get clogged. Still, leave in distilled water for some hours and leave to dry for a week or so. You have a good chance it working.
