Don\'t Believe All You Read Dept.

Browsing through an old PBO (November 1991) I came accross the following:-
"..........some readers may still not be aware that DECCA has been reprieved......It is guaranteed to continue until 2004 with an option to extend until 2009 and 2014......."

One of those cases where the decision was overtaken by events. In 1991, who could have predicted that 24 satellites circling the earth would be so successful and dominant in assisting the navigation of yachtsmen? with a massive contribution from the leisure electronics industry who could see the potential for development with GPS where they never did (apparently) with Loran or Decca.

If I remember correctly, in 1991 it was Loran that was going to displace Decca. Whatever happened to that? GPS became fully operational in July 1995. Difficult now to remember when we didn't have it.

Loran 'C' is still operational, and is regarded as a backup in case all those satellites suddenly fall out of the sky. It was first developed in WW2 and stands for LOng RANge and is not very accurate and will be pretty useless for Channel Hoppers
