Domestic (UK) radio in Greece

I'd love to be able to receive BBC R3, R4 in the Ionion - can anyone do this, if so let me know what kit you have please.

I've looked at satellite radio (there seemed to be some around a few years ago with tiny dishes but not now) to no avail. I know we can;t get satellite TV (from Astra) in Greece but thought the lower sensitivity required by digital radio might make this possible. Sat radio is big in the US but uses Sirius and I don;t know if a set will receive Astra. So - two questions there really (1) is it possible to get BBC terrestrially and (2) if not is there some satellite kit which will do it. (Incidentally US receivers can be as little as $20 !!)

I use the Internet via BBC's player. I use my laptop when in the Ionion boatyard or here in Sweden from the house. I reckon that a mobile sim from a greek provider with internet may be possible from the boat while cruising. Emphasis on may because I have never used my phone for such things since a few horror stories on accidental roaming charges were posted on here. I have heard somewhere that the EU are to ban roaming charges in 2014 so may be possible and economic.

IPlayer video is restricted across the Eu, you can get some stuff and not others. Go via a proxy server to circumvent.

Radio can be listened to on your mobile phone in the Eu on the iplayer app if the app is downloaded in the uk.

Look out for data and roaming charges until next year!

We just go to the BBC Radio # and click "listen live", worked in Spain, Portugal, Malta, Greece and Turkey - did n't download anything in the UK. MOST of the time there is enough band width on marina wifi systems and the usb modem dongle and local sim works every time. Video is different, the only service we have found that works is filmon.com - no need for a proxy server.

Can certainly listen to internet radio (BBC, Radio Swiss etc) on my cellular data connection when in Greece. It takes negligible bandwidth. Video is a different matter, even using a proxy server with iPlayer is unsatisfactory,

I don't use it now but if you have a dish try hotbird sat, I am not at home at the mo but of the top of my head it is 13 degrees. The sat is easy to pick up on a small dish, you get BBC world news and lots of radio stations (Hotbird is free to air) could be worth a try.

Satellite radio (Worldspace) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1worldspace on the Africa satellite was still functioning just over two years ago but not by April 2012. The Asia satellites were turned off some years previously. Until quite recently I had a set that would pick it up but unfortunately it went to the tip a short time ago when the service stopped.

BBC radio generally works well in Greece via a Vodafone dongle or iPad microsim but annoyingly they will not allow you to listen to any sporting events for contractual reasons.
