Thinking about replacing our deep cycle domestic batteries, 4 x 6V 175Ah Oldham (3KQ11). They are now 18years old but still performing perfectly and have never run out of juice. But after 18 years I think I should preempt their end of life and replace them soon.

Any advice or suggestions welcome. Oldham were taken over but they made industrially robust batteries, obviously as our have lasted 18 years and still working.

Have a look at Battery Megastore. Choice of batts and great pricing.

If you can look after your batteries so they lasted 18 years, and still going, I'd suggest 4 x Trojan T105 6V x 225Ah, or 3 x Rolls S160 Series 4000 12V x 125Ah

Trojan T105RE
There must be 3 different T105s, the RE (for renewable energy) is meant to be the one suited to boat use pattern more (especially if the boat is equipped with solar panels)
At least that's what I'm told and I'm getting 4 pieces in May.

However if they STILL work (which is amazing tbh!) why replace yet?

cheers

V.

I've just ordered a Hankook 135AH from Batterymegastore. Made in Korea apparently. I'll let you know if it doesn't last too well, but it does have a 4 year warranty.

We replaced the previous Rolls batteries on our Broom 42 with Rolls 6v 250ah last year.

Went for Rolls again as the ones fitted were the originals and 12 years old.

Trojan 6v here OF for our 38. Can’t remember exact model designation but they were more of less the same as the originals. Like you our previous batteries were quite old. Maybe not 18yrs but still definitely over 12yrs. While the old ones were still working the new ones defiantly improved things - plenty more oomph from the electric toilet and there was no dimming of lights Etc. Got them from Battery world in Kimmage and dropped them into Fergal Kearney to put in when he was servicing the boat. I’m sure they’d deliver down to Portumna or killaloe.

We had a starter battery go last season. No real warning but it was a bit of an inconvenience as the bow truster ran off it. Might be worth replacing those while your at it if they getting on in years.

Out of interest has anyone ever claimed on a battery warranty !

If you did I assume that they would claim you had let it run flat !

Or blame it on a charger fault.

I received a refusal from a local marina whena battery declined significantly in performance after two years even though the other battery of the pair they sold me at the same time was okay (and is still in service a further two years on).
I thought perhaps a local marina might honour the guarantee.

Rather than paying the marina even more money I bought from battery megastore and don't expect to make any warranty claims. The Hanook domestic batteries from them seem fine and were considerably cheaper than marina prices.

My bow thruster battery is a Halfords own brand and has just about reached 4 years since fitting - which corresponds with the length of its warranty. I bought from Halfords only because it was needed on the day and the day was a Sunday. I don't think it was excessively expensive.
