Early Dolphin Engines - not the new ones .

We have a 29ft FBR Brown designed wooden yacht built 1973 , and find the 12hp Dolphin twin cylinder twostroke petrol engine originally fitted to be very smooth and quiet , but have upgraded the petrol supply lines to copper pipes run through close fitting flexible fuel lines , sealed at the ends . Have also fitted a bilge blower and gas alarm, auto engine fire extinguisher.
The only trouble we have had with the engine is a points problem caused by the points cam oiling wick bending away from the cam and wearing the points heels out , closing the points gaps fairly quickly .

You can easily lift the engine and cradle out yourself for painting etc.
Can't stand the 24v starter system though ! Two batteries to start a little 2stroke!!
Or when needing reverse - the need to stop the engine , select reverse on the electrical control box , and restart the engine backwards. Yes , the engine runs backwards in reverse - no gearbox , just a Fenner belt drive to the propshaft .
Anyone else running one of these ??

Yes , having to bend down to the control box for long enough to do the necessary fiddling to obtain reverse meant you were out of the loop for a wee while , long enough indeed to become scary coming into unfamiliar pontoons.
