Doing our first night aboard on Saturday

Thanks all, first night went fairly well.
It was cold, the little 450W radiator did virtually nothing! but, we were preapred for that so wasn't really a problem.

Only downside was going to bed at 8:30, so come 4:30am, I was wide awake!

Got the boat moved this morning without crashing into anything, only a voyage of about 50 yards though :o

And, our first boat breakfast this morning.
I've always thought a fry up tasted at it's best when cooked and eaten under the trees in the New Forest, but I reckon a boat breakfast could top that in better weather

Glad you had fun but sometimes you posh boaters and your fancy ways sicken me! You should be eating a proper tinned breakfast to be a proper winter boater:

Only joking of course about the poshness but those tins are not as bad as you might expect and can be kept aboard without a fridge.

:D

As seasoned campers, a posh breakfast is the minimum requirement for a first night aboard!

Indeed.
Plates and cutlery have been installed before we even tackle the outdrive. Got to get priorities right!

You sir are observant and clearly a most experienced boater. I found that picture on the internet.

When performing a galley tally yesterday I noticed that not only had the rust got worse on some tins but on many something was eating the labels. A slug I suppose. Have resolved to buy no more boat food until the present stash is scoffed.

Does Moxy use bogroll as napkins, to go with the tinned stuff? :D

I generally wipe my face on my sleeve old boy. Don't want to waste that fancy Thetford branded paper I keep buying, (am I being conned?).

I do all of this safe in the knowledge that people may say 'urgh - he has bean juice on his sleeve' but will not be thinking the name lettering on my boat is pissed. Imagine the shame.

Personally find that a frission of Ferric Oxide with a soupcon of slug droppings can only add to the delights of the feast,a little mould on the bread also helps. !

Murvs SWMBO dropped his marine radio in today with the news that the latching pin on his outdrive was mostly absent, hence the reversing problem. If its the bit think it is,as a known cheapskate meeself would find a bit of stainless rod the correct diamhttpeter cut it to length, drill two holes for the split pins and Baszinga :)

Expensive bit No 30
Actually stand corrected ...cut a thread on each end.

Thanks Fred, have spent the whole evening (unsuccessfully) trying to find that part number...

From the Googling I've done, common opinion seems to be that it won't work properly if not a genuine Volvo Penta part.
Can't really see why not but the marina have given us a few contacts to try to source a reasonably priced one.
The last owner did say that you can get the pin built at a toolmakers firm for around £10.00. Maybe that was the problem though, I imagine it would need to be made from marine grade stainless rather than cheesium. There's virtually nothing left of it at all!

Do feel a lot happier about getting this sorted now though. Not only is the pin clearly absent but the bellows appear to be new.
Just need to check the oil and satisfy myself that it has been serviced and we should be ready to go back in :) (once I've trawled through 4 million pages of antifouling information)

Can't really praise the marina highly enough either.
They've bent over backwards to help, offering advice and contacts as well as being extremely helpful and flexible with storage/lifting etc.
I hope this is OK with the mods, but I'd like to thoroughly recommend Cuxton Marina if you're after a mooring on the tidal Medway, we're obviously very new at this but have been thoroughly impressed with them so far :)

Short term, couldn't you get away with some galvanised threaded rod cut to length with a nylock nut on each end?

814301 Volvo Penta setting pin - Best I could find was £45 :eek:

It is a bit of stainless steel road.
My first port of call would be small engineering workshop such as the stainless steel place in Otterham quay.
If you get stuck my horrid younger brother does expensive things to Harley Davidsons in the workshop down there, certain that he or somebody like him could bash you something up.
Would also ring Coastal rides to see if they have got new or even secondhand one.
If you just want thing sorted would ring Keyparts and cough up £50.00
Not exactly a "Vickers Fit".From memory the thing rattles round in its locating holes like a sausage in the Blackwall tunnel.

Ps.Told you those oil filled radiator thingies are blimming useless for keeping actual real people warm
Its a fan everytime .

Thanks both, will investigate.
Need to make doubly sure that is the correct part, it's described as a "transom shield pin" rather than an adjusting rod.
It's the bar that the reverse engage latch locks around when you select reverse, rather than the rotating rod itself and is the bit fixed onto the transom plate rather than on the leg.
I think I may just have to order new as I have nothing to specify sizes against, seeing as the old one has rotted away!
