Dogs on boats. Whippets?

I liked the fact that our whippet didn't want to go swimming. He made a good attempt at staying out of the water, like any good sailor should. And who wants to share their boat with a soggy, damp dog??
 
Sure you don't mean a good drink, a loyal woman and a small dog?

I know it's been done, but I should imagine most cats would do a runner as soon as the boat reached dry land. Hence how the species of maritime rat catchers spread so widely.

Read 'Narrow Dog to Carcassone' whippet on a narrow boat. All the problems of the breed, but on inland waters . It is a very funny book as well.
 
If you look at YouTube Sailing Nandji you can see some of the issues sailing with animals can cause, especially when you want to get home for a while

 
I couldn't cope with all that donor paid teeth whitening or veneers on a couple of sea gypsies.

Good on them for not just dumping the dog in some foreign country though. Wouldn't have been the first.

I'm glad I grew up not having to spend my day record myself doing a real time commentary on my life. It's like a self-imposed Truman Show. Wonder how much of this will exist in 100 years like the diaries from the Victorian era (did when I was young), to be pored over and analysed in classrooms?

We forget, in these reality TV days, that to make these casual looking videos, must take hours of editing, drone flying, direction and replay acting. It may feel like we're just dropping in on friends (who are always asking for our money) for viewers, but I'm not sure it's a pay off in living my life that I'd want. It's also largely self-possessed or narcissistic.

Where the original poster at with his canine dreams?

Personally, I'm the opposite from them. I couldn't own a pet BECAUSE I'd want to disappear off for 2 or 3 weeks and consider it a little unfair on them. It's like having a kid after all.

Is it just preferable company (to humans) they seek? The search for unconditional love.

I mean, I'm mostly with Mark Twain on that.

I love dogs and have been lucky enough to keep several, but now I spend all my time aboard, I have sadly decided not to keep a dog. It's not fair on them. They would be great on a big sailing barge or narrowboat though, and there is actually a breed called the Black Belgian Barge Dog, bred for the job. Might be worth a look.

I had a German Shepherd pup who grew up on a N.Sea trawler, and he learned from a youth to climb ladders by sticking his legs through the rungs. Decscending was impossible though. And sheps aren't lap dogs you can put in the toolbox. Nor would it be desirable for man nor beast. The arrangement didn't last long.
In my personal opinion, people who put leads on cats are cruel and inhumane. To me it is obvious psychological torture. Others may be cool with it, I never will be. If you want a cat on a yacht, get a tiny kitten, habituate him to sailing, and don't be shocked if he deserts you ashore, to ' sow his wild oats' which situation puts you in an ethical and practical pickle.
Get a parrot!
 
I guess the question of cats on boats is a different one not being asked here but how about asking, in a worst case scenario, would you want or is it fair to drown the animal in your life along with yourself through misadventure? Most are content in going no more than a few 100 metres from their food bowl.

Is it something the RNLI faces often? I mean, I know they go to rescue animals sometimes but in yacht rescues.

Some cats, I don't know if it is many & it's certainly not all, do adapt to walking on a lead just fine. It's less "cruel and inhumane" for the birds if they stay indoors or only get out on a lead. I had a couple who enjoyed going on fairly long walks with me and would come to a whistle. Not very good at coming to heel, however. Tended to depend on their own resources when faced with a threat.

You could read 'Narrow Dog to Indian River' by Terry Darlington in which he takes a UK narrowboat down the US coast with his whippet but it may not be much help.
 
According to me the best dog that you can take on boat is the one who is good mannered and has a loving nature. I believe, there is no better dog than a Pitbull that you can take on a boat. Because he loves people and he loves to be around the people. He'll enjoy himself and make everyone smile with his stupid stunts. I know many of you gonna disagree with me because many people think that Pitbull is violent dog. That's why I mentioning the reference to words, here is the reference Blue Nose Pitbull Temperament - Shocking Reality - Blue Nose Pitbull Dog. A Pitbull has a very good temperament that he loves people.
