Dog\'s home suffering

Since Uri Geller doubled the bankside mooring charges at Sonning in July I haven't seen any boats moor there. It's now £10 per night. The fees are supposedly donated to a local dog's home so they must have seen a real drop in their income.
Most boaters now moor on the opposite bank.

Well yes, ten quid and not lining his own wad filled pockets. As good as a "No Mooring" sign!

One has to ask if the increase was not designed to discourage mooring there /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Hmmm! Interesting... very interesting.

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

I hope you aren't getting ideas Byron. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think Tony is correct, if he wanted to attract tenners he could at least mow the grass and prune the overhanging trees. His man tells me they have been very busy - with what I neglected to ask!

When he first started charging, Uri himself told me it was to deter NBers who used to run their noisy generators all evening to watch television. He also told me the money went to a donkey sanctuary, whereas the current story is the dog's home.

Ha.. you name dropper /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif surely if the gennies were a problem couldn't they have mysteriously bent a valve or something.

Unfortuantely £10 doesn't seem to be considered much for mooring these days, isn't it that much at the park in Henley, Maidenhead council try to charge £12 or 13, Wallingford is £8, Shillingford £10 although with power. Marinas seem to be £20

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

I think Henley is £8 and I heard you have to use the car park Pay & Display now. Don't know what happens if you don't.

At least at Shillingford you get free power, a beautiful lawn, refuse disposal and the option of restaurant & bar.
The Maidenhead one, if you are talking about the Brunel Bridge mooring, it actaully turned out to be South Bucks District Council and I believe they have reduced it to £5 after pressure from the ATYC.

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

Ok not quite so bad then, I'd still rather save spend the money in the bar though /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

Thames still cheap - Sparkes (Hayling Island) is £1/ft per night. It's MDL so free for me but the receipt said £38 discount and my pal came too in his 23 footer and had a shock when a £20 note wasn't enough.

And when I did my week up to Oxford earlier in the year I didn't need to pay once.

Hmmmmm....does that mean you managed to 'avoid' paying ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Mind you, with this years licence costing over £500 ....... /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Thats as it should be, your license fee includes provision of 24hr moorings and towpaths etc.. We should only have to pay for extra facilities on private land if you choose to. A council who comes along and charges you £5 for mooring to a piece of common land e.g Cookham, with not even a bin or is kept dredged etc.. really annoys me.

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

Good grief, wouldn't want to moor there. You'd end up with bent spoons and forks. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I wonder if he can bend a complete NB

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

And places that you get to airate the ground by knocking your pins in , saving the landowner a job. Complete with water shallow enough for a dachshund to paddle in. Bins stating "No Boat Rubbish" and get charged a tidy sum for one night. i.e. Brocas. Blah Blah blah

Don't start me off /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

"No Boat Rubbish"

Obviously I wouldn't dream of putting any bits of fibreglass, used gaskets, or sump oil from the boat ...

Most of our rubbish tends to be eating and drinking rubbish, so I chuck it in (c:

I used the words 'eye candy'.......not 'eye sore'......

and WHAT sunlight???????? Mind you , if you'd bothered to turn up on Saturday you'd have seen some /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Fortunately for you, Ramage & Co ensured hat Birchwoods were not totally noticeable by their absence /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

Not a single boat there when we moored outside the GH. restuarant last week. However several boats stayed overnight on the bank opposite. The river bank above the lock near the skool boat house seemed a nicer location, apart from the nuts/seeds/fruits from the tree above going "bonk" on the bedroom roof all night long...........

Re: Dog\'s home suffering

I have always been critical of the so called 'receipt' you are handed by the collection guy.

No company name or identification, just a mobile phone number and a 'Thank You, The Management'.

IMHO not a legal document in any way shape or form as no indication as to who you are paying and certainly no guarantee that payment is being made to any charity.

Great pity this is happening as quite a nice place to stop overnight.

Would be interested to know if the EA have any views on the matter.
