As we're moving to sail we've been wondering how we're going to get Jimmy up and down the companionway steps with as much ease as possible. He's too big and heavy to put under your arm.

Plenty of yachts have sizeable dogs so how do you do it? As anybody devised a fiendishly clever method/

I bought a folding 8'-6" motorcycle ramp from e-Bay (~£39) and attached a carpet using tie-wraps and the large Labrador was able to walk down with a little trepidation and words of encouragement from me. From cockpit to saloon deck is 4'-6" so quite a distance but it worked very well.

The carpet was due to the sharp aluminum of the ramp and to stop cutting the paws.

Companionway is one thing- it's the boarding ladder at the stern that we have trouble with.
Difficult to lift Beth the spaniel from a bouncing inflatable!

Just get her to stand on one tube and then jump and down on the other one....

Tried that one once (sans dog). The dinghy flipped!
