I confess to liking Allen's mail shots on technical developments in sailing hardware - of which I am a recipient by email.

The latests is about dog bones which may become the latest must have after soft shackles and low friction rings.

The last time is saw such devices being commonly used was on duffle coats - which must date me.

How To Use Sailing Dog Bones

I'm not an employee of Allen's nor a recipient of any remuneration - they have just found a way (that I like) in these difficult times to keep their name prominent.

Take care, stay safe

Why invent a new word for what is simply a toggle?

Yeah, that is funny.

But the wrinkle is that the toggle is used with a soft-shackle-style noose, making them very secure with a smaller toggle.
a. They are easier to make exceptionally strong than a conventional soft shackle. No complex knots, and no weak spot because there are no sharp turns.
b. You can buy the toggle, but all you need is a length of aluminum rod and a few minutes with a drill and rat tail file.
c. Fast to make. The method they show is not the simplest IMO. An open shackle requires only two eye splices, a pass through, and a seizing. Easier to remember.
d. Easier to handle with gloves.

The down side is that you have a lump of metal, which is the main reason I use softshackles (to eliminate banging or scratching). But at least it is aluminum and not stainless. I have a few on my boat.
