Dog life Jackets

Staffies cannot swim, wrong build, they just sink (Pugs, Boxers are the same). Gun dogs like a Spaniel and Lab are great swimmers with webbed feet, try keeping them out of the water! Be careful making the dog wear a coat to get it used to a life jacket, they can over heat. (Bouba, post pics of your Spaniel swimming and loving water....It's just for me until the wife lets me have another Springer) ;):encouragement:

I have three rotties and they are all rescue dogs used as guard dogs, one has jaws which are part crusher and part crocodile so I sympathise, I get him cows thigh bones from the butcher and he demolishes them in less than 5 minutes.

I also have a swimming pool and it has steps along one end and I enticed him down and he had plum syndrome, as his plums hit the water he just stops; it took time but I used to swim and the other rotties came in and very slowly he got used to coming in to the deeper water by watching the other dogs, he was supported as he got further into the water and learned to swim just to get to the other dogs but it was a time consuming process but he did learn to swim and slowly gained confidence. Perhaps this is a way forwards, get other swimming dogs he is familiar with to swim and assist him as he gets deeper into the water and gains confidence.

Conclusion? every time I am in the pool he runs at full speed and dives into the water to be with me and loves swimming.

My Labrador weighs 32kg, he wears a life jacket when on the pontoon , he doesn’t do it so much these days as he’s getting in a bit and generally stays at home. When he did fall in from the back of the swim platform, we were able to pull him up easily as he had the back strap to grab him with. Without it, only a collar would have been available !! ?

Can I make a confession? You see that little boy in the pictures above is a rescue dog and does not like to swim :(
He loves getting his belly wet. But if you take him in deep water, he gives you ‘the look’ for nearly a week. Don’t get me wrong, he can swim. He just won’t.
But I’ve told the dog’s mother that by the end of this summer he better be swimming, or else:p

Well...if we are doing dogs in water :)

Tried encouragement with treats as a pup

:D You have your work cut out Farsco. Mind you I'm not looking forward to teenage years....

Teaching to swim via treats? I have some little experience of that. Here is my daughter learning to swim with the carrot being a kneeboard ride. She has the courage of a lioness.

Brilliant Bruce :)

My husky is all growed up now.....prefers digging! He’s not exactly camera shy
