We have a buoyancy aid for our dog (larger than intended border cross patterdale terrier) with loop that we attach a lanyard to. That can also be used to hook him out with a boathook when he falls in. He is usually clipped on when we are sailing but not always when we are moored.

Does anyone know of a suitable open harness, one that would offer some support to the back end as well if he had to be hooked out without getting the way of his bits.

Most dog harnessess that I have senn simply goes around the shoulders. It would need to have a "boathook loop"

Being optomistic I am hoping we might see the sun once at least this year even on Windermere, he gets a bit hot with buoyancy aid sometimes.

Regards

David

What kind of buoyancy aid has he got at the moment? The ones with the velcro flap underneath do make dogs get hot and uncomfortable whereas the Crewsaver style ones which are open webbing with just the buoyancy bit on top I think actually keep black dogs cooler by keeping the sun off their back, also the lifting loop is stronger than on some other cheaper ones.

I have sometimes used an ordinary harness rather than the LJ on the one dog who who otherwise has the cheap velcro flap one, in hot weather, but only consider this as an aid to manhandling him back into the dinghy and wouldn't want to lift him aboard using it.

Got a great one from China on ebay for our Patterdale/Boarder cross. £10 inc delivery with "emergency retrieval loop" on the top

.

I made a copy of the crewsaver type and when carrying out sea trials it occurred to me that most of the buoyancy was in the wrong place. Most of it was out of the water. The mark 2 model has the buoyancy down the sides on the dogs flanks with some buoyancy around the neck and chest. The tail area does not need much. The velcro strap finishes up on the back where the buoyancy used to be. The idea being that the dog has to be comfortable lying on his side. Obviously sewing up your own there is no problem with keeping costs down. Have not test run the mark 2 version as yet.

He has both types, the more open one (inherited from a previous dog) and the velcro type swapped when he outgrew a smallm buoyancy bought when he was a puppy and we did not know how large he was going to grow.

Most of the time I am happy with these, if he had a nickname it would be Exocet, he is heat seeking and would get cold when on deck and immobile . It is just when it is really hot.
