Then try entering Poole, against a spring ebb, on a Saturday evening, at the same time as the fast cat is leaving and the Truckline ferry is arriving, in a boat that flat out is making half a knot over the ground. Wicked.

I think faced with a tide only half a knot less than my max speed over the ground that I might have considered waiting for the tide to ease?

Gosh (or perhaps that other word more likely to be used) Ben, your boat does 30knots! Where on this planet does a sping ebb reach 29.5knots?

Now that would be the place to get a bit of excitement back into your life

Sounds like fun.

If it was like the previous weekend, you were surrounded by PWCs waiting to go wake-jumping behind the Condor. Plus the water would be churned up by the stinkies going in different directions, all made worse by the wind over tide - or should that be 'against' ?!

On discretion being the better part, etc..

Well it is only that fast for a few hundred yards, and with the restaurant at Parkstone Yacht Club stopping serving at 2030...

Sounds like you had it easy to me. No chain ferry crossing, no drifting fishing boats, no mobo wash, no X boat racing fleet, no SE 6......
For info: The big ebb runs from 3 to 0.5 hr before LW at the entrance and big flood runs from 0.5 to 3.5 hrs after LW. The smaller ebb and flood are about half the rate of the big uns so not such a problem. The small ebb runs from 4.5 to 5.5 hrs after LW and the small flood from 4.5 to 3.5 hrs before LW. Slack slots are: 5 and 3 hrs before LW, at LW, and 4 hrs after LW. Note times are the for Poole entrance (UKHO admiralty free tides give times http://www.ukho.gov.uk/). Most publications refer to Poole Quay or Bridge where LW is 0.5 hr later than the entrance.

oooo that brings back memories.. we used to cross to Studland regularly in a split life between London and Studland.. The high point of the journey was of course the chain ferry.. we always watched out for the struggling yacht / mobo attempting to enter / exit and miss the chain ferry .. So what shapes or lights would a chain ferry show.???

or occasionally get sucked under. A dinghy I think got smashed into it 2 years ago. Luckily the lady sailing it got sucked under and popped up the other side.

I don't know what lights the ferry uses. Perhaps it should use the one for fishing, but from what I remeber the whole thing is lit up from bow to stern (if it has them) even when sailing so you'd have to be pretty daft to miss it.

Didn't know you were a visitor to Parkstone YC, that's our home when we aren't out and about, weren't there though on Saturday (or many Saturdays come to think of it). The tides were biggish last weekend, we came in from St Peter Port about an hour before LW on Sunday and had around 4kts of ebb in spots. Best is to stay over close to the training bank inside the port buoys but be careful between the inner end and the ferry where it can shallow a bit too fast.

Yes there was an Evolution 26 that was close inshore there and he shot past us (is there a counter current?). But the closer he got to the ferry ramp the slower he went, until we just about caught up with him.

Last time we went into Poole we made the mistake of using Salterns. This time PkYC, which was excellent - just about the quietest Saturday night I've ever spent in a marina, and a meal for two that left enough change from a £20 note to buy ourselves a couple of rounds of drinks.

No counter current just less tide with the shallow water, runs all the way until you get to where you have to move out to clear the ferry slip, but near LWS Shell Bay near the entrance can get a bit too shallow. Sooner or later though you have to get through the entrance and round the corner, these are the strongest points.

Glad you liked the club, visitors are always welcome, Salterns I imagine must now need a second mortgage to use overnight. Have a look at our website too on www.parkstoneyc.co.uk

The ferryman hoists one of his black balls at whichever is the prevailing front end when underway. Presume its classed as being at anchor even though its moving?
