I had funny incident with my engines yesterday. When I nudged them into gear to reverse out of berth, port engine was racing, much faster than starboard one, so played around with them for a few mins and at first, port engine was really racing (both in forward, and reverse gear). Then for a moment or two, it didn't go into gear at all, then it settled down and was fine.........until I came back in when it did exactly the same and caused me to make a right hash of coming alongside. On reflection I think this has happened before, because I've been conscious of 'crabbing' when I move slowly up from my berth and out onto the river, then when I run at normal speed it's fine.

Check your drives oil level. If it is overfilled, or has water in it, it can cause the problems you have (your profile says Volvo petrols, I'm assuming 280/290 drives)

When you say water may have got in it, I assume that the only way that could happen is for sea water to get in! In which case an immediate lift out would be in order? /forums/images/icons/frown.gif

That goes without saying.
Volvo set ups are very sensitive on oil level. Anything that takes it over the max mark will effect it (either too much oil, or water in the oil)
Level is checked with the dipstick resting on the top of the threads, i.e, NOT screwed in.

Water ingress is usually either the gear selector oil seal, or the prop oil seal(s)

They do survive water ingress remarkably well actually. Doesn't do them as much harm as you would expect.

We ended up with water getting in through the large rubber boot that connects between the leg and the back of the engine. We took off the large jubilee clip, levered back the rubber boot only to find sea water pouring over our hands!!/forums/images/icons/frown.gif Gutted!

Anyway, the legs had to be taken of, cv joints refurbed, bearings replaced in the link at the back of the engine. Very expensive! But cheaper than new legs./forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Yep, that is the worst place for a leak, also a good reason to check / change bellows properly.
