Does owning a boat make you feel vulnerable?

The point about insurance, preferably before you even sign the cheque was brought home in Norfolk recently. A couple of scrotes set fire to a boat shed containing about 23 boats, most of which had recently been purchased. I was told last week that only 2 of them were insured.

I know exactly what you mean.

I've had my boat left with a boatyard thats name is a 'marque' in yachting in america.

Stuff that went wrong and / or done wrong and / or neglect would beggar belief. Yes, thats made me feel vunerable. I go miles out to sea in this bloody thing!

Good side - i got a big discount.... but not enough

Bad side - just a thoroughly unpleasant experience that shouldn't have happened. Left a bad taste in the mouth having to force them to see the error of their ways.

I feel like a i've just been on an extensive boat mechanics / electrics course where some expert has left deliberate mistakes that you have to find or you fail the test.

And i rent out my house... don't get me started on estate agents and tenants... *goes to refill whisky*

Interesting thoughts here. Vulnerable? Yes a bit, sometimes. However, it really depends on your mindset. It is a perfectly "natural" thing to worry. Probably one of the things that makes us humans special. We have potential to worry about anything in life: our kids, our jobs, our homes... in fact the basic state was probably a parmanent state of worrying where the next food is coming from. Seen in this perspective boat ownership is just another important thing to worry or be happy about. In the end we only live here once (whatever you believe about what happens next).
Having said that, I do worry about the boat from time to time. Like I do about other things. But I also enjoy her. Lte hope that I can keep the balance right. Otherwise it will be time to sell up.

The original question was " Does owning a boat make you feel vulnerable?" to which my answer is "No." However, I wouldn't be overjoyed if it came to harm, but I also do not lose sleep over it. I do what I can to keep her safe and rest is left to fate. Life's too short to worry about things you can't control.

I'll message you once I'm nearing Fort Myers, see if we can raft up for drinks - even if the raft is on land. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Not any more !

I have boat "under my nose" now. I have private mooring - no need for insurance to have mooring etc.- its all my decision now....

Vulnerable ? Only to my own stupidity now !!

High Nigel "vulnerable to my own stupidity" thats the bit I really don't like. My own stupidity. It feels far better to be a victim of someone elses stupidity or wikedness than to realise it is your own fault. (especially as you get a bit older.) Still I would rather DIY and fail than to pay someone else to do it and fail.
I take it you have moved your boat to Latvia and now have no boating in UK. good luck to you. If you get desperate for some sun come visit us in Perth. olewill

Left UK ....

Yep - she's on blocks outside front door now ... destined for all the love and attention she's missed all the years sitting in UK.

On SB - there is a thread with pic's etc. of the move ...

I have asked an Insurnace Co. over here for quote - but I'm not fussed about it.
