The bottom of the mast was only seeping a little around the heel casting. I got it as dry as I could then poured in some water based varnish.
yes it's a bodge but it did the job until the mast came out. Then I cleaned it all up and improved the drain fitting as well as sealing the foot properly with a gasket compound.
At the same time I re-worked the sealing above deck level, but I didn't feel I could 100% trust that and I expected the mast to stay stepped for some years.
I value having a boat with no rain leaks.
