Does anyone recognise this scene?

Artists routinely play fast and loose with local topography. Hills suddenly appear and cliffs triple in height if it will make a picture look prettier, so this scene could be just a fantasy.

Yes, I think you are probably right. For a view of Harwich in the south west I would have placed the sun in that position but now realise that it is not a sunset scene, just an orange painting.
 
Are you sure that it is in England? At first glance, without the benefit of seeing the original, my first thought was Malta, Grand Harbour, with Fort St Angelo on the right and Fort St Elmo on the left. Compare with this Anton Schranz picture...

You are right, since Jane and I have sailed in and out of there more than once I should have recognised it. Stupid boy.
