Any informed opinions will be welcomed.

In particular, do you know if they were available with a shallow draft of 5 feet? If so, was that option any good?

Ta!

Can't tell you much about the Scanmar except that I think that James Jermaine owned one. I've a similar type boat, Maxi 1100, with a shallow keel, 5', and while I think I can point as high as a fin keel version, I lose a bit in leeway. To compensate for the shallow draught, they put an extra 300 kg on the keel. On the Maxi owner's website there is an article written by an owner who started off with a fin keel version and then had the shallow draught version fitted.

Thanks for both these lightening fast replies.

I've seen one advertised with draft of 5 feet, so maybe Bill is on to something.

Just in.....the Broker has contacted the owner, who confirms the draft IS 5 feet.

I think I need to take a skeet.

It is not unknown for owners to be wrong about boat details, even draught. Take a tape measure, if ashore. All the details I have from three separate sources say 5' 8", 5' 9" or 1.75M which is near-as-dammit 5' 9", and none mention optional shallow keels.

Yes.....I've not seen any mention anywhere else of a shoal draft option.

Neil, for draft in the water...

bit anoraky but you could drape a heavier-than-water rope under the keel, with a knot tied at the waterline on port side and then note and mark ( say with a series of knots then a marker) the waterline on starboard.
Then measure the beam at that point and er its trigonometry innit

In the process of buying one. If all goes to plan should be the proud owner by next week. If anyone has any information I would love to hear it. I found history on sailboatdata but not much else.

No personal experience, but from a brief googling it appears that there were some problems with insufficient internal support for the keel on the first couple of years of the production run (1980 - 81 I think). This was improved on boats built the following years.
Worth checking out on the boat you are considering.

Yes I did read this, also there were some issues with the chainplates on early models but this one is towards the end of the production run and I believe these issues had been sorted out by then.
It’s over 30 years old and still here so I guess it should be ok. We have had a thorough survey which has come back with only minor issues.
The boat is called Escapade of Deben if anyone knows any history of her I would like to know. The current soon to be X owner has had since 2013 I believe but I just wondered where she was before that.
Just idle curiosity really.
