does anyone have non-white cockpit seats?

Every boat seems to have white cockpit seats. These look great at the show, but grimy after a year or two.

Some sales bod told me that white reflects the sun better, so it's cooler. But surely it has exactly the same heat capacity, so once covered with bum, it's about the same. And all the restaurants have non-white seats in the med and don't seem to have people saying "ouch aargh can we have white seats please" when they sit down.

So, can I have non-white seats please? Or is there another reason?

I once had a boat which had white cockpit seats with dark blue inserts; if you sat on the blue parts in the sunshine, even the British pseudo version, it felt like your bum had caught fire. My last boat had blue and white cloth inserts in the seats which were very comfortable but stained easily so if you have kids and dog this is a big no-no

Personally, I'd have cream coloured seats which wont look so grimy as white after a couple of seasons and look classier especially with some coloured piping on the edges. Windy do this well

Re: fairline do

Cor blimey there are lots of decisions to make with this Leopard 23. You haven't got to wood (try maple, not cherry?) carpet, curtains, vacubogs or regular, etc. But do tell me when you get to electronics cuz I like that bit and can bullshit for ages about useless crap.

Anyway, I'll make a fuller posting on Corby but funny you should mention seat colour cuz 2 or 3 of the Squaddie 58s (there were 4 being built) had off white, light beige, GRP mouldings and stuff on the flybridge to reduce glare. Actually they looked good, I didn't see if the seat fabric was non white too but suspect it would be and it looked as tho it was going to look good.

The heat thing is nothing to do with heat capacity. The dark colours simply do not reflect sun so get hotter. White will always be many degrees cooler after hours in the sun, but a light colour should be ok too. When your bum is on it then it will cool down to your 37 deg bum temperature and at that point the heat capacity of the material becomes relevant - the lower the heat capacity of the material the faster it will cool, but I would think the heat capacity of dark and light fabric is the same.

What about some kind of waterproofy cloth fabric instead of vinyl? The problem with vinyl is it conducts heat to your bum so fast it nearly burns, whereas you can sit on hot woven cloth type fabric without getting fried. Is non vinyl in the options list?

Re: electrics

Erm, all I sed about the lectric things was that it wd look nice all erm the same colour, and instead of lectric controls it can have a balancing dial to show when exactly same revs, and a chrome and a 12v socket for the er mumble mumble. Ahem anyway the wood, no I did see a maple but it looked a teeny bit as though I'd made it from bits bought of B&Q, and definitely no red wine. So, light wood mebbe maple floor, screaming purple leather seating, gold-yellow panels and cherry. Just like Liberty, the Perini Navi. Praps you could advise, since I have never yet put a course in a plotter and got a boat to track that course.

Anyway, lkng fwd to the Fairline report.

Re: electrics

Bad news on the cream/offwhite seat colours, all my cockpit seating is this colour and it just looks like 3 year old white seats do even though its new !!

Re: seats

Matt,

Just flicking thru ''The World of Power' that came with BI a few months ago. Page 37 has a Baia with navy blue Alcantara cockpit seats. Also an X54 Ipanema with black Alcantara seats. Also a V65 with blue and white stripey pvc sunbed cushion covers.

If it was my choice i'd go for blue and white sunbed covers, pref, Alcantara with navy blue Alcantara cockpit seating.
