i am looking into buying an apple mac for the boat for chartplotting on when i go to travel down to the med early next year.

this has been chosen as they are very compact, however i have now got the problem of finding a piece of marine software for chart plotting via my gps etc...

does anyone have a mac onboard or use one at home for the same purpose?

I think it most unlikely that you will find any plotting software that works with the Mac. Macs became the platform of choice for the graphic arts and press industry but have failed to make any real headway into other areas. PC's outnumber Macs by almost 100-1 or even more.
Dont understand your comments re macs being more compact etc. There are some extremely attractive PC laptops available at significantly lower prices.
I would recommend Tsunamis software which works well on my Sony Vaio.

Not always right..

As a committed iBook user , nice to see the usual prejudices continue . However I concede that for most people it is a step too far. It is absolutely brilliant operating sytem for home use.

However I do agree with B1 that if you are using OSX for maritime charting use, and that is a primary application then you are going the wrong way. Only 1 company that I can find do mac charting software , and I would always go PC-format cos that is no choice !!...

No prejudice, just facts. I have both PC and Mac machines here....both have their pros and their cons.
Anyway, wots wiv the little piccy of a boat?ARe you trying to let us in on something with a softly softly approach in case we all start screaming 'spreadsheets' or something equally provocative?/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Yes, 'prejudices' a little strong ...especially as you only had a go at the 'compact' nature.

No the piccy was knocked up by my daughter. It has a 'L' plate , but will have to get her to enlarge. I'll stick on your site.

No sublimal meessage at all as I have given up buying this summer as into new job in a big way and can't find time to haggle...also like to know how new job pans out.. so a couple of charter days will be all for this year plus scrounged days afloat.

Take care

The older versions of maxsea used to support macs. However i don't know if you can still buy the mac version.

Extensively use Macs onboard and have done so for years but charting software will take you to PCs. The only recognised commercial Mac package (MacSea which became MaxSea) is now no longer produced in Mac OS format.

I have found another producer of Mac software for charting. Check out http://quintessencedesigns.com. NavimaQ is the name of the package. It is supposed to support BSB, Maptech and Softchart formats. Apparently the company is working on an OSX native version. Not sure any of this much good; have only had the briefest of looks running it on Classic mode under OSX and it looks very basic but as I found it recently thought I would mention it.

You could attempt to run better packages under emulation if you have a fast Mac but judging from Win 2000 performance on Virtual PC running on a 500 PB G4 with 768Mb RAM it would be too creaky. Best off buying a PC for this task; lots of interesting Win packages, my personal favourites being Raychart and Tsunamis.

Wouldn't part with the Mac for other remote working tasks though...far easier to get it to talk with a variety of different gadgets, ironically, and Safari on OSX a good improvement on web page upload times, handy when I'm relying on a mobile phone for links.
