Got the 435 which is the updated beast if that helps....

Screen is clear and nice to read - Is average size for this market. Can be a bit cluttered at lower levels

Setting up routes and waypoints is intuitive getting the thing to start following a route sometimes is not, more playing needed*

The base map would be like navigating using an AA road map. The coast outline is there but nothing else. This is the same for all plotters.

My biggest woe presently, you cannot switch the back light off, yes it will dim, but even at it's dimmest at night, I had to refit the cover to retain night vision. The light is controlled by software and I intend to ask RM' to update this to allow OFF. At the nav station not a problem, but if I wanted it at the nav station I would buy a Yeoman.

Other than that a nice bit of kit, I upgraded to enable use of new chart format and better interfacing, though, for day to day use, so far, I preferred my Geonav plotter. Hopefully that will change as I get more used to it.

* If you make a route and then follow it is simple, if you have routes saved and want it to follow a particular route in the same area, I had problems, I am sure it is experience. I could not after much playing get the reverse route to work at all, I will be contacting Raymarine about this one.

The 425 is going dirt cheap online ....

Raytheon 425 at £200
Garmin 172 at £245
Magellan FX324 at £300 (incl. Solent chart card)

Mmmmmmmmmmmm hard choice ...
