As I've already said on another thread I do listen to CH16 but have been sorely tempted by endless bloody radio check requests which get right up my nostrils. Oh yes and I wave at everybody , gin palaces , fishing boats , subs , et al.
Actually under the GMDSS even if you don't know the MMSI number, you could still contact an unknown vessel either by using an "ALL-SHIPS URGENCY CALL" on 70 or by using Channel 13 the Bridge to Bridge collision voice channel.
Remembering that Channel 16 is now officially a Distress and Safety Working Channel it is important for users to know this, as many Merchant Men no longer seem to listen to 16, even though the IMO asked them to do so "when practicable". Probably to do with the lack of R.O.s.
If she's a Merchant/SOLAS the skipper should be monitoring Channel 13 wherever a danger of collision exists. If she's non- SOLAS, ie voluntary-fit more likely to be on 16 or possibly 70.
Glad to see there is someone in "Authority", so to speak, monitoring the forum. So helpful having a knowledgeable person giving advice like for certificates on the thread below.
Is there nothing we can do about the incessant use of ch16 for radio checks. I'm sure this is what makes most people turn off. Its those doing the radio checks that will lose out, no one will be listening when they make the real call (well, except me, I'm the fool thats always listening even though the crew complains about the crackle). It wouldn't be so bad if they knew how to use the radio properly or left a passage plan.
I have made this point before but anyway
how many people actually on not receiving a response to their radio check actually go back to port/morring whatever and call out an engineer. most just hang up the transmitter and carry on as planned. IMHO
