Does antifoul really work

Re: Does antifoul really work?

Yes antifouling paint does deter weed and barnacle growth. I can get about 8 weeks of clean hull which with wipe over in water can reasonably be extended to most of the season. The in water wipe over eventually removes much of the paint (1 coat)ready for the next winter repaint.
In the same conditions I have seen shiny bottomed trailer boats left on a mooring have the finish ruined in 3 weeks without A/F.
So yes for me it is a mandatory annual painting currently using Jotun that certainly helps to keep the weed away. (with help)
Note current daily temps reaching 31 degrees often higher with pleasantly warm water. I swim around the boat each day for pleasure so a wipe down is no prob.
Obviously a boat in Uk especially Scotland would be a different story but yes it works but not necessarily for you. olewill

Yes

Good quality paint applied IAW the instructions will work. Micron provide a guarantee but you need to apply the right amount and this can be a fair amount of paint (3 coats for 2 years for Micron). Some form of clean/scrub each year is probably inevitable and therefor a coat of paint at the same time is easily achieved. Teamac 'D' has had good results and covers well.

SKIP the antifoul rubbish and use copper /bot/coat it has worked well on my boat for 8 years .! all the antifoul makers hate and rubbish it ,. after their brilliant idea of flogging a paint, to all those yottie mugs, that dissolves when immersed in water!! its the ultimate rip off ! go copper every time

My boat actually has a copper coat put on at great expense (I understand) by the previous owner. It worked so badly from the start that he put Optima on top of it (an undercoat had to be put on top of the copper first of course)! The copper's still there though, under the antifouling.

I too am a fan of Micron. Freestyle lives on a swinging mooring in the Menai Strait with a fair tidal flow. After 6 months afloat, there was barely a hint of slime on lift out. I suspect, however, that Micron's secret weapon is not the copper content but its propensity to shed itself. Quite a lot of last seasons two coats are still on the hull, but if you brush against it you get covered with blue, chalky dust.

Every one I know that tried it ended up a) rubbing it down every year to re-activate it, or at least try to and b) finally giving up and antifouled over the top.

The funny thing about folks views on antifoul is that different levels of expectation or claimed success are numerous! I hate to see even a trace of speed sapping slime on my hull, others think slime and a bit of grass is acceptable as long as there are no barnacles. I've had lots of people tell me the cheapo brand they used worked perfectly but then when I sneeked a look at their boat you could see otherwise, even if pressure washed the telltale crap remained where the slings were. You do get pretty well what you pay for in my book, if you can dry out and scrub regularly then a cheapo is probably OK. In our case we compromise with slightly less performance from Micron CSC over Micron Optima but have a diver give a quick brush over before our main cruise, for us it works, but if we didn't have access to a good reasonable local diver we'd go back to Optima.
