I'm chartering a yacht out of Rhodes in May and want to visit Symi, Khalki, Tilos and Nisiros. As they are so close to the Turkish coast and I would like to call at a few anchorages in Turkey, such as Knidos and Palamut, can someone please explain the Transit Log situation to me?

We have chartered out of Rhodes Mandraki a few times recently & I am sure you will find that the charter co. will probably not let you leave Greek waters.

Simi is a definite & do get a sponge, they are cheap & one of the few tourist souveniers worth getting.
You must also go to Khalki on the way back, (just watch your navigation & do check the pilot, but most hazards can be eyeballed so not really a problem) pretty village and water available on the pontoon. Just around the corner to the west is a bay with good anchoring and a great Taverna all on its own. You can then go around the south west of Rhodes to Lindos and overnight in the bay just south of Lindos. In the pilot its called Ak Ay Apostoli, take a line ashore. Take care on the entrance, but not really a problem.
Lindos town makes a great last night, plenty of bars etc.

Thanks. That's disappointing - seems a farce to sail within a mile or so of Turkey and not be allowed to visit the ruins at Knidos, for example. I wonder if this situation will remain when Turkey joins the E.U.
Out of interest who did you charter from?

if this your first time in the dodecanese, you will have a great time. IMHO it is one of the best cruising grounds in the Med. if you like peace & tranquility, although the Meltemi can make it a bit fun somedays, & induce a 'Vodka Moment' as one of my female crew became famous for.
Cosmos are boats only, but if you do as we did and book an early charter flight to Rhodes direct you should be ok for around £160/ £170. Its even better if you can go the day befor and take a taxi into Rhodes town and get a night in a cheap taverna ... great fun, and your time of year it wont be a problem.

There is a taverna inside the old town wall, just off the harbour entrance, go past the jewlery shops, some of the best fish meals in Rhodes, expensive but well worth finding (sorry can't help with the name but was not too well afterwards, something to do with the pea's or retsina) There are some really excellent Greek wines, try them, & the local beer is great 'A Methos Moment'

Were originally going to go to Sardinia but I've always wanted to go to Greece and thought we could throw in Turkey as a bonus. The other thing to sway us was a daytime flight from E.Mids. (10 mins. away). Ended up booking a package holiday in Faliraki - tee hee. This was the only cheap way to get a flight without having to go from somewhere like Gatwick. Total Cost for each of the 4 of us going = £399 for flight, redundant apartment, 2003 Bav41. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Re Pilot - I was going to ask if that one was the best. Imray are bringing out one specifically for the E.Aegean but it doesn't come out til August. Fancy issuing a new Pilot half way through a season /forums/images/icons/crazy.gif.

I think that you will find that most charter boats have a Heikel. There is a better chart?pilot book that you can find out there by a Capt N Elias ? {cannot think of its name sorry brain dead this morning] cheers bob t

hi , palamut is ok, but watch the weater at knidos. we saile around there 3 year ago and got hamered.

Don't miss Panormittis Bay on Simi. One of the safest spots in the Rhodes Sea area, a useful hideaway in a blow, and nice bread available at the monastery!

As others have advised, you won't be able to just "pop in" to Turkey with the boat - too much politics and history to allow that - however if you want a taste of Turkey you could look at day trips from Rhodos and/or Simi. In season they have fast ferries or hydrofoils for day trips to places such as Bodrum and Marmaris.
