I am sure that this has been asked before but I would really appreciate a brief summary. This summer I am planning on taking an 18ft Bayliner cuddy to France on a trailer. Aim is to use it for a few days on the Dordogne and then a week off the Normandy coast. Aside from proof of ownership and evidence of insurance, what else do I need in the way of documentation and how do I get it? I have read about ICC and CEVNI, is this really necessary? It seems like potentially an awful lot of hassle (I suspect) and is it mandatory for the type of use I have in mind? If so, how do I obtain said documentation? Thanks in advance

You will need to do a course with an RYA recognised school, ICC 3 days Practical course, It is a bit like a basic driving licence for a boat. Inland waterways a paper test [CEVNI],

as powerskipper says, you do need those docs and you need to have originals of the docs in your possesion whilst on the boat. The fr police do have the power to impose on the spot fines and they charged me £100 for not having orig ships papers with me. I wd also have the passports on me, the more docs the merrier.

You need to find someone like powerskipper (or er powerskipper in fact, depending on where you are ) to take the ICC test.

Note also that they don't call it a Quarter Pounder in France - it's a "Royale with Cheese" :)

Thank you for the advice. Do the regulations only apply to inland waterways? If I stick to coastal waterways I assume they are not required! I should add I am a Yachtmaster (sail) and have never experienced this requirement when sailing in French coastal waters. Also, does my Yachtmaster ticket qualify for the ICC? Hope you can help.

No you don't need ICC for coastal waters, only inland.......and yes YM qualifies you for ICC. Fill in form on RYA website - if you are RYA member, ICC is free, if not RYA member, you have to send a small fee as well
