My curiosity having been aroused (probably an unfortunate term to use) by Bignick's post, I have set about researching the history of this pastime in the annals of Britain's maritime heritage.

I have found several quotations which, for unknown reasons, either failed to make it into the history books, or were altered for some political expedient.

Here are my early discoveries:

"Kiss me Nurse Hardy"
"I'm telling you, if you don't start warming that stephoscope Dr. Bligh, we'll have a mutiny on our hands"

Has anybody else come across references to these nautical antics?

Overheard in N. Atlantic

"Captain! Captain! There's an enormous iceberg ahead and we're going to hit it and sink if we don't take urgent evasive action"!

"Calm down, Number One; there'll be plenty of time to take avoiding action when I've finished administering this enema. Anyway, isn't she supposed to be unsinkable"?

A hurricane blew across the Corryvreckan. It didn't take long for the auld manky steam sloop to be swamped by high waves, sinking without a trace. There were only two survivors: the boat's owner Claymore and its crew Parahandy who managed to swim to the closest island.

After reaching the deserted strip of land, Parahandy was crying and very upset that they would never be found and there was no whisky. The other man was quite calm, relaxing against a seal.

"Claymore, . Claymore,Claymore, how can you be so calm?" cried Parahandy sobbing into his sleeve. "We're doomed, we're doomed. Nae body'll find us here."

"Sit down and listen to what I have to say, Para," replied Claysie. "Five years ago I gave the Fleetwood Lifeboat £5

"So what?" wailed Para.

"Well, it's time for their annual fund raising, and I know they're going to find me," beamed Claysie.
