Hi-

A lazy Sat morning question (please don't shout at me for not finding info elsewhere...)

Boat, VHFs, red diesel and People (all from UK) what should we turn up with in ROI?

Nick (Rivendell)

I tried quite hard to "book in" on arrival in Eire, some years back. Eventually I got thro to the Garda & they asked if we were on holiday, I said yes, & they replied, "Have a lovely time" & hung up on me . . .

I think the official attitudes are a little more pragmatic & laid back rather than officious & pedantic. It is a wonderful place, with wonderful people. They may hate the "English" as a nation, but they do seem to be wonderfully welcoming & friendly to visitors, even when they have come from England.

Enjoy your stay, it isn't hard to do.

Went to Wicklow last summer then cruised up the coast. We had all taken our passports but no one asked for them. Had a wonderful time every one we met was friendly and helpful.

usual boat doc's , passports, diesel same as europe vhf as uk
though very unlikely you will be asked for any paperwork
pretty much treat your journey as if you were travelling in uk
we can use marked diesel but supposed to declare usage & pay tax
you wont be asked for any paperwork by any marina .

Their diesel is green but in my experience it mixes readily with red or white (or blue?).
Is it an allegory?

Turn up and you won't have a problem. Irish people who sail will welcome you as will clubs and marinas.

Those that never take to the water will think you're all rich eccentric English and why would you sail when youi could be in the pub? So come and have a drink...

Enjoy, be sociable, and here is the biggest cultural challenge - especially to those from London and the SE... ...talk to people you don't know. You might be suprised to find they're not all nutters, robbers, or evangalists.

But most of all enjoy, enjoy, enjoy...

We were boarded once by Irish Customs between Dunmore East & Kilmore Quay. They radiod us first to say they wanted to board but when I asked for 5 mins delay to dump the wakkibakki, they said "no, we're coming now!" All good natured but they did want to see passports, reg docs and log.
