Have used DSC over the past few years to talk to "friends" when cruising the islands after sharing MMSI's - found it easier than general open VHF calls "are you there" - if they are there they will pick up, if not they won't and no-one else, unless scanning, will know you've called and no one has answered. Of course if you don't need to talk to folks, eg if a lone wolf, then the capability is wasted.
Can be useful on passage and in some remote anchorages if planning to meet, although mobile phones are often as, if not more, useful in many areas, so useful in the more remote areas. Never used Groups.
