I do. I think probably all sensible people do, which is why I'm concerned that my ad on ybw bargain hunter, (see "Buy a Chandlery Bargain" > Bargain Hunter" at the top of this page), is not being seen.

If you go there -http://marinedirectory.ybw.com/Marine_Directory/chandlery/home.jsp
on the left you will see a box titled "About Bargain Nunter", and underneath are five or six ads. of which mine is last. Can you see them?

The "Big Boys" ads, Gael Force, Force 4, Compass24 and Mailspeed are not affected, but I'd like to get a feeling for what YOU can see. The ads you should be seeing are:
Flag
Marinestore Chandlers
Piplers
Seamark Nunn
Towsure
Purple Marine
Yachtrope
Allgadgets

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Because the ad is part of the web page rather than a seperate pop up, I dont think it gets blocked. I have the google toolbar and the MSN toolbar, both block pop ups, and I saw all the adverts.

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Well I'm game for a bit of Peek-a-Boo
Yes, I see Bargain Hunter
and scrolling down, the last add I see is www.gaelforce.net. Is that you?
Hope that helps. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Then you should vote NO. If you scroll down the page you would also see Force 4 and Mailspeed, but they are in the middle of the screen, if you cannot see six more ads on the left then you have a pop-up blocker and its working very well!!

The ads you should be seeing are:
Flag
Marinestore Chandlers
Piplers
Seamark Nunn
Towsure
Purple Marine
Yachtrope
Allgadgets

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Nope.
All I see on the left is Bargain Hunter. I definetly cannot see Allgadgets.
Bummer.
Are you being charged for something they cannot deliver? /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

I can see them all John.

Cant vote on your poll though, as im on AOhell and apparently I have already voted ! Well so it tells me......

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Jphn,

This isn't being blocked by pop up blockers, as we discussed by pm sometimes back. It is being blocked by ad blockers though. I turned that off at the time of our discussion, and left it off, and can see your ad.

People using 'block ads' settings on Norton Internet Security and the like, will not be able to see it.

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

OK, goldfish memory, perhaps it was ad blockers. Nevertheless the effect is the same. I'm a bit disappointed with the voting though, clearly from the posts I am not alone and yet everyone votes "yes".

I wanted to get some ammunition for IPC to change their tune, it doesn't affect my intention to demand it since one lost ad is a loss I've paid for, but it would help if the numbers were a bit more convincing!

You should have told us that bit before we voted /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

I'm not looking to fix it, but I voted once, at least two correspondents below say they can't see them, but there's only one other "no" vote. That's frustrating.

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

I wonder if it counts the vote of the pollster, so leaving you the one vote short if it doesn't (assuming the other 2 voted) - maybe Brendan will know?

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Lots of people have pop up blockers. Rather fewer have ad blockers, which would explain the poll, though not many have voted, so not really a representative sample so far

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Forgive me if this a stupid question but how do I get this add blocker and does it stop those annoying email ads ?
Ian

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

You can stop a lot of ads by using a HOSTS file. This is a text file that redirects all the ad server URLs back to your own computer IP address so they can't be found and the ads don't load. Do a Google search on "hosts file" for more info and for preprepared hosts files.
If you do try this and you have XP or Win2000 take note of the info about disabling the DNS Client service first or your computer will go veerrrryyyy sssllloooowww!
You can block any site you want by adding its name to the file which is handy for disabling stuff like women's internet shopping sites or sites you don't want the kids using.

Re: Do you use a pop-up blocker?

Ad blockers are built into some internet security products such as Norton Internet Security. They stop ads appearing on some websites. They will not stop email ads, for that you need anti-spam software which is completly separate.

Pop-up blockers and anti-spam are far more useful
